National Preparatory Schools Cross Country Championships

Malvern College, Sunday 2nd March 2008

U13 Boys:  Sam Auger, JJ Dewes, Felix Fowler (Capt), Dominic Hill, Tom Johnson, Nikolai Malyguine

U11 Boys:  Toby Barnard, Oliver Cook, Adam Dewes, Elliott Hunt, Julius Manton-Jones, Richard Morgan

What a great day this was for Cross Country in the delightful setting of Malvern College with the looming Malvern Hills as our backdrop.

Competing against 38 prep schools our runners were always going to be under pressure but they proved themselves up to the task!

The U11 Boys race was 2.6 kms and our runners pushed hard down a very good course that involved uphills, downhills, flats and wet and dry. Over 200 runners lined up at the start and we could see that the pace was going to be quick.  Julius ran hard and was the first Eagle House boy to finish, then Adam and Elliott who put in a great deal of effort on this tough course.  Oliver was next in for us and Toby pushed himself well to complete a good run.  Richard ran an excellent race making up plenty of ground as the race unfolded.  Well done boys - a great achievement.

There is no team position for our U11s, but we were not in the top six.  Individual results - the first three positions are correct but the following tickets were incorrectly given out and I do not know the accurate placings.  Malvern College have apologised for the mix up. We all did well!

1st    Julius Manton-Jones

47th  Adam Dewes

88th  Elliott Hunt

        Oliver Cook

        Toby Barnard

        Richard Morgan

The U13 Boys team were very focused before the race began but we knew that our earlier successes were going to hard to repeat without a Herculean effort. We need not have worried as the team ran the race of their life.  Tom was on great form and pushed hard at the beginning, running with Felix in 2nd and 3rd place.  On the longer 3.6 kms course there was more of an uphill length and this could have tired our runners but there was no stopping Tom and Felix.  Tom used his strength to power past the front runner and he came home in FIRST PLACE.  This was a quite outstanding achievement and he can feel proud that he is the top U13 Prep Schools Cross Country runner.  But Felix was determined not to be left behind, after a great run he came in 5th place.  After a short gap in came Sam and then JJ - both putting in huge effort.  Then Nikolai who ran well, closely followed by Dominic who can be pleased with the way he finished his season.  This was a proud moment for the team and although we did not get into the medals for the team placings we can be very happy with all that we have achieved this season.

Team results:

1st   Millfield Prep           42

2nd  Cheam School        71

3rd   Spratton Hall          80

4th   Thomas' Battersea  93

We were 5th out of 21 schools. Individual results were:

49th  Sam Auger           15.14

It was a fantastic moment to see our two runners go up to receive their medals.  Congratulations!

Congratulations are also due to Malvern College, especially the PE Department, who organised a great day of running and welcomed us with warm hospitality.  This was the perfect way to finsh our season.

My thanks go to all our runners who have done so well this term.

You can see from the team list that this was a big fixture and one that would showcase our talented runners from throughout the Prep School.  It was a glorious afternoon, the sun was shining and as always the Highfield organisation and course were first class.  This was the second fixture in as many days for some of our runners, but stiff legs were put aside and the results show yet another superb afternoon of achievements.

The U9 Girls team ran first.  The Highfield course is another great running experience, with open fields, muddy tracks and woodland paths.  The girls were to set the standard for the afternoon and their results were excellent.

Caitlyn - 4th, Pippa - 5th, Annabelle - 15th, Alice - 30th, Sarah - 54th

U9 Boys were also out to prove something and their running showed great potential for the future.  The Highfield fixture attracts many schools and there must have been at least 80 runners in this race.

Robert - 8th, Sven - 11th, Max - 24th, Hassan - 32nd, Ben Barnard - 35th

The U10 Girls had had time to really get prepared for their race and they were determined to show the large number of spectators how things should be done.  The team came first overall with a fantastic effort from all the girls.

Darcy - 2nd, Lily - 3rd, Maggie - 13th, Tanaquille - 45th, Maimu - 48th, Catherine - 58th

U10 Boys faced some tough running from other schools but still managed to hold their own.  The mud was no obstacle for the large number that set off from the start, although one competitor lost a shoe!

Adam R - 21st, Charlie - 23rd, Zeus - 32nd, George - 37th, Adam B - 38th, Daniel - 57th

U11 Girls had to run a longer course and produced some great performances.  The course involved a longer lap through the woods and mud was a big feature of the experience!

Imogen - 4th, Charlotte - 10th, Suzanne - 20th, Alys - 64th, Kim - 67th

U11 Boys had all run hard at Lambrook the previous day and were determined to show that they still had energy left.  We were not disappointed with their efforts.  Adam Dewes ran the race of his life and came over the line in first place. The team came first overall.  Well done boys.

Adam - 1st, Julius - 3rd, Oliver - 15th, Toby - 17th, Elliott - 22nd, Richard - 24th

U12 Girls had two laps of the course to do but they could not have run harder.  There was real effort on the faces of the team as they passed us in the wood running down to the finish. Claire and Ella and Francesca were great exponents of team running.

Claire - 12th, Ella - 16th, Francesca - 18th, Chloe - 34th, Emily - 36th

U12 Boys consisted of two of the team that had competed yesterday and they ran hard in this fast race.  Tom Johnson led from the beginning, finishing well ahead of his nearest runner. Saxon, who had recovered from injury, made sure that he was in the top ten.  This was a great run from this Year 7 team.

Tom - 1st, Saxon - 7th, Dominic - 9th, Tom - 37th, Connor - 49th

U13 Boys were all still on a high from the previous day's success and if anything that inspired them to do even better today and they did not disappoint.  They ran an awesome race and finished in 1st place overall.  Felix ran a great race and the others were all close on his heels.  An excellent example of team running.  Congratulations boys.

Felix - 2nd, Nikolai - 6th, Sam - 7th, JJ - 8th, Cameron - 21st

Everyone deserves huge praise for their running and we were very proud of them.  Great running and plenty of medals and trophies to take back to school!  We would like to thank Highfield for a very exciting afternoon and for their hospitality. Here are some images from a great event.

Thursday 7th February 2008 Lambrook Haileybury Cross Country Meeting

U13 Team - Sam Auger, JJ Dewes, Felix Fowler (Capt), Cameron Henderson, Dominic Hill, Tom Johnson, Nikolai Malyguine

U11 Team - Toby Barnard, Oliver Cook, Adam Dewes, Elliott Hunt, Julius Manton-Jones, Richard Morgan, Adam Robinson, Thor Winkler

U13 Boys Team - Winners of the U13 competition

This was a day to be proud of, as our runners gave their all at Lambrook Haileybury.  The U13 team were immense and were rewarded with first position out of twelve schools. They ran as a squad and their fitness and commitment paid off with a superb result.  The positions were as follows:

    Tom Johnson - 2nd

    Felix Fowler - 4th

    JJ Dewes - 14th

    Sam Auger - 22nd

    Nikolai Malyguine - 28th

    Dominic Hill - 32nd

    Cameron Henderson - 40th

This gave us a combined score of 102 from the first six runners.  The school in second place achieved a total of 122.  Tom Johnson was set the task of running another quick race and although he did not win he gave a brilliant demonstration of how to run a long, flat and muddy course.  Felix Fowler ran the race of his life and came in a brilliant second.  JJ Dewes ran his best race so far this term and Sam Auger, who started close to the back of the field, ran with power and determination to come through in 22nd place.  Nikolai was also in good form and pushed himself hard with Dominic not far behind.  Cameron tried hard and his effort was commendable.  Well done boys - a truly superb performance.

The U11 Boys did not let us down as their running was powerful and full of effort.  The team came 7th out of 14 schools and finished with a total of 246 (first six runners counting).  The positions were as follows:

    Julius Manton-Jones - 15th

    Adam Dewes - 23rd

    Oliver Cook - 29th

    Elliott Hunt - 53rd

    Toby Barnard - 58th

    Adam Robinson - 67th

    Richard Morgan - 78th

    Thor Winkler - 94th

Julius ran an excellent race and Adam and Ollie were not far behind - a great run.  Elliott battled hard and ran his best race of the season so far.  Toby put in all the strength he could, to stride over the line and Adam should be pleased with his fine run.  Richard and Thor were not left out when it came to the effort stakes, and they worked hard all round the course.  Well done U11s - a gritty performance.

The U11 Team at Lambrook Haileybury

The course at Lambrook is runner-friendly with long flat straights, some ditch jumping and a woodland track that ensures it is a true cross country course. This was a great afternoon of running and thanks goes to Lambrook for organising the event and the boys for pulling out all the stops, and in particular the mighty U13s.

Thursday 24th January 2008 Eagle House Cross Country Meeting

        U13 Boys Team - 2nd overall                                   U11 Girls - 1st overall

U13 A Boys - Sam Auger, Saxon Coop, JJ Dewes, Felix Fowler (Capt.), Cameron Henderson, Tom Johnson

U13 B Boys - Kevin Akunwa, Billy Dovey, Dominic Hill, Max Kirk, Nikolai Malyguine

U13 Girls -  Francesca Barnard, Ella Higham, Emily Holbert, Chloe James, Elodie Jobson

U11 A Boys - Toby Barnard, Oliver Cook, Adam Dewes, Richard Morgan, Julius Manton-Jones, Adam Robinson

U11 B Boys - Adam Bailey, Elliott Hunt, Connor Kent-Payne, William Kirk, George Wilks, Thor Winkler

U11 Girls - Imogen Arton-Powell, Darcy Coop, Charlotte Coop, Maggie Knox, Suzanne Pritchard, Alys Whitehead

A full fixture at Eagle House and what a great performance by our own runners.  Glorious sunshine shone down on us and the running conditions were good.  Our U11 teams were ready to show our guests how the course should be run and the anticipation amongst the runners was palpable.  Unfortunately the race proved unsatisafactory for the boys as several runners took a wrong turn and finished the course too soon.  Adam Dewes and Oliver Cook, who were leading the race, finished in 40th and 41st position.  They would have finished towards the front had there not been a confusion as to the correct route.  The U11 boys race was therefore not possible to judge, as runners were not finishing in their correct positions.  The U11 girls ran a superb race, finishing in first place overall.  Charlotte Earwaker came in 6th and Imogen Arton-Powell 7th.  A great performance girls.

The U13 race suffered no course problems and we were treated to another superb race from Tom Johnson and Felix Fowler.  Tom finished in 1st place to great Eagle House applause and Felix came in shortly after in 3rd place.  Saxon Coop (15th), Sam Auger (18th) and JJ Dewes (28th) completed the A team's count and with a total score of 65 we finshed 2nd overall in what was a tough race.  The U13 B boys also ran their best and there were some excellent performances from Kevin Akunwa and Nikolai Malyguine.  Ella Higham ran a great race for the girls team and overall the girls competed well and ran hard.

The afternoon belonged to our U13 A Boys team and it was excellent to see them running so well for the second time in less than a week.

Saturday 19th January 2008 Inter Schools Cross Country Championships, Wellington College

What a superb afternoon from all our runners.  Well done.

                    Our brilliant U13 runners!

U13 Girls - Ella Higham, Emily Holbert

U13 Boys - Saxon Coop, Dominic Hill, Tom Johnson

U15 Boys - JJ Dewes, Felix Fowler, Cameron Henderson, Nikolai Malyguine

The Cross Country season traditionally starts for us with this fixture at Wellington.  The two age groups that we enter allow our best cross country runners the chance to compete against schools from all over Berkshire.  The courses through the woods and around the sports fields at Wellington are tough but the runners tend to enjoy the flat terrain.

U13 Girls Race:  Ella and Emily were our Year 7 runners and out of a big field they ran well, keeping to the front of the pack as they entered the woods. Ella pushed out and manged to hold her position, finishing a brilliant 12th place, and Emily, in her first race for Eagle House, ran a very good 2.5 kilometres and finished 26th.  A great effort from the girls to start off our afternoon.

U13 Boys Race:  Our three Year 7 boys are a talented group of athletes and they did not disappoint.  Tom, Saxon and Dominic set off with pace and were at the front of the pack.  Tom soon found the front position and opened up a lead from all the other runners - apart from one who was to stay with him throughout the race. Saxon and Dominic pushed hard to work up through the runners and they were determined to tackle the 3.5 kilometre distance with real grit.  Tom kept his lead until the course opened up on the fields again.  He allowed his opponent to take pole position and then in the final 200 metres he opened up and came home to finish first.  What a fantastic achievement!  Saxon was not far behind and finished 5th and Dominic came in 16th.  This was a real show of talent from the boys and Tom ran the perfect race.

U15 Boys Race: Our four Year 8 boys were running against a lot of Year 9 boys and there was no doubt the 4.5 kilometres were going to be hard going.  I am very impressed with the fighting spirit that a lot of our runners have this season and these boys are a good example of this.  They all set off well and soon Felix was comfortably in the top 20.  Nikolai, Cameron and JJ were running together and found a good pace in the middle of the pack.  Felix kept his position and came back onto the fields with power.  He finished the race in 17th place which is a superb achievement.  Although the other three boys were 58th, 60th and 64th their running and effort cannot be faulted.  This team deserve great praise and their running bodes well for the season.

Well done team - a performance to be proud of.
