MATCH 4 VS HIGHFIELD  3/12/11

Today was a difficult day, we tried hard in the first half but in the end we seemed to lose our spirit and were comfortably beaten.

Highfield had some big boys who ran with pace and vigor and unfortunately there were not enough boys who were prepared to tackle them. Highfield started strongly and scored two early tries, but slowly we got into the game and scored a lovely try just before half time. We went into halftime three tries to one down but I was very confident that we had started to gain the momentum and that we would come back. We were rucking better and some boys were really tackling their hearts out.

Unfortunately it did not go this way and although we scored a try early on in the half we struggled to maintain the effort and attitude. In the end Highfield ran in quite a few tries and we stopped tackling. This was a little disappointing as we have been working hard and I have seen real progress over the last few weeks.

Keep your heads up boys and let's end on a high against Lambrook on Saturday!

MATCH 3 VS PAPPLEWICK 24/11/11

The boys put in a huge performance today, but unfortunately we were beaten in the dying moments of the match.

Throughout the match the boys played with heart and really tackled with enthusiasm. We have been struggling with rucks, as we desperately want to get our hands on the ball and this is letting us down. On a few occasions we did it very well and we presented the ball well for the scrumhalf. During most of the match we had the territory, as we built up phases but we could not get over the line. At half time it was still 0-0 and it was anyone's game. At the beginning of the second half we started very well with a few boys having some excellent runs, finally the pressure told and Cosmo Smith burst around a few defenders to score an excellent try. Unfortunately we could not score again even though we got close on many occasions. Papplewick had a very good scrumhalf who was exceptionally quick and he managed to get a few breaks late in the game and before we knew it they scored 3 quick tries. I felt very sorry for the boys, as they had given their all and had definitely had the majority of possession and territory but we could not convert that into points.

We need to keep working hard boys, as we are close to being a very good side. Well done!

MATCH 1 VS CRANLEIGH 10/11/11

After only a few rugby sessions we were very unsure of how this match would go, but in the end it was a very impressive first performance by the team.

We started the match very well holding onto the ball and working through the phases. We were very patient but we kept it simple and eventually the pressure told and we scored the first try. Cranleigh then promptly took the restart and scored with barely a hand being placed on their runner. This was a real cause for concern as non of our team seemed interested in defending. This was proved again shortly after when the next time they got the ball they ran through us again with ease and scored their second try. We had a good chat and worked out that if we did not start tackling it is was going to be a long, tough afternoon. I was so impressed with the boys as they started to make their tackles and this put more pressure on the opposition and they then stared making a few mistakes. We managed to get the ball more and with that we scored a lovely try just before half time to even up the scores. This was both teams first match and you could see that in the amount of errors and general understanding.

The second half was much better with both teams getting more into the match. There was far more aggression and I was really impressed by the Eagle House defence. We eventually managed to hold onto the ball for a long period of time and this told as we scored our third try to take the lead. Cranleigh then came flying back at us and we could not hold out, as they scored their third try and this was how the game ended 15-15. It was a fair result as both teams had been quite similar throughout.

I was so impressed with all 12 boys that played in the match. The level of play improved significantly throughout the game and I was so happy with how the boys defended after not tackling at all early in the match. We have a lot to work on but this is a great start to the season. Well done boys!
