Match 7 - Saturday, 10th November

Colts C v Moulsford: LOST 7-21 (T: Reece Williams; C: Tom Newland)

On a blustery, chilly day we began at a blistering pace and Reece Williams scored an early try, converted by Tom Newland. Moulsford had some very big forwards and they won most of the lineouts and scrums. They pushed towards our line and scored a converted try to make the half time score 7-7. In the second half we had the wind behind us and we came very close to scoring on a couple of occasions. Moulsford picked up momentum in the last quarter and they broke through our tiring defence to score two more converted tries. We continued to push for a try right up to the end, with Alex Wilkinson and Adam Robinson in particular 'playing out of their skin', but to no avail.

Considering that Moulsford beat us 50-0 at Eagle House last year, the final score was by no means a disaster. Our tackling was much better than the last game and we tried to run with the ball, although not always in the right direction!

The team: Harry Baldock; Eoin O'Kane; Oscar Gaff; Adam Robinson; Matthew Stuart; Tom Newland (c); Charlie Saxby; Alex Wilkinson; Max Chawner-Davis; Charlie Riddell; Jonny Cope; Lewis Riddell; Noah Walton; Reece Williams.

Match 6 - Wednesday, 17th October

Colts C v Caldicott: LOST 7-52 (T: Oscar Gaff; C: Tom Newland)

After the highs of our previous two matches we came back to earth with a thud. Caldicott are a very strong rugby school who play the sport for two terms and they beat us 50-0 in a very uncompetitive match last season. We conceded three early tries, but we grew in confidence as the game progressed and we managed to score a try before half time through man-of-the-match Oscar Gaff. The metronomic Tom Newland converted to make the half time score 7-21. We began the second half quite sprightly, but Caldicott took full advantage of our poor tackling and scored five more tries.

The positive aspect of this match is that we gave Caldicott a good game and we managed to score a try. On the negative side our tackling, which had been so good at Papplewick, let us down and there really is no excuse for an opposition player to run through five of our players and score a try! We have one match left and it would be great to end the season with another win. Carpe diem, boys!

The team: Harry Baldock; Eoin O'Kane; Oscar Gaff; Adam Robinson; Matthew Stuart; Tom Newland (c); Charlie Saxby; Alex Wilkinson; Max Chawner-Davis; Odise Vila; Charlie Riddell; Jonny Cope; Lewis Riddell.

Match 5 - Saturday, 13th October

Colts C v Papplewick: LOST 14-19 (T: Max Chawner-Davis, Matthew Stuart; C: Tom Newland 2)

What a match! Forty minutes of end-to-end excitement, with the result in the balance until the end. We began very strongly and scored an early try through Max Chawner-Davis, which was converted by Tom Newland. Papplewick had some dangerous runners in their team and they soon scored a try to make it 7-7. We conceded a second try when a Papplewick player 'burned' Matthew Stuart on the wing and sprinted for the corner. Luckily it went unconverted to make the score 7-12. Undaunted, we bagan a period of domination and we penned Papplewick in their '22'. From a succession of rucks we managed to get the ball to Matthew and he scored in the corner. Tom converted again to make it 14-12 with five minutes to go. We held out almost until the end, but Papplewick followed up a kick into our '22'  to score a converted try which give them victory.

This was our best team performance of the season so far and considering we lost 50-0 to Papplewick last year, we can hold our heads very high. We came so near to winning and by the looks on the faces of the boys at the end they were gutted to lose, but exhilarated all the same. New recruit Adam Robinson made some good breaks and Alex Wilkinson got a bleeding nose as a 'badge of honour'. Well done, boys and I hope you can play like that against Caldicott!

The team: Harry Baldock; Oscar Gaff; Eoin O'Kane; Charlie Saxby; Tom Newland (c); Lewis Riddell; Jonny Cope; Max Chawner-Davis; Alex Wilkinson; Charlie Riddell; Odise Vila; Matthew Stuart; Adam Robinson.

Match 4 - Wednesday, 10th October

Colts C v The Beacon: WON 19-5 (T: Tom Newland 2, Alex Wilkinson/Charlie Saxby; C: Tom Newland 2)

We woooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooon!

After watching the Colts D team succomb to a 48-0 defeat, we began the match with trepidation. Conceding an early try did not help matters, but as the game progressed we gained in confidence and began to exert pressure on the Beacon defence. Tom Newland scored a try before half time to level the score. We began the second half as we left off with another try from Tom, which he converted. The Beacon then had a period of dominance and they came close to scoring, but our resolute defending kept them out. A few minutes before the end we had a great chance to score in the corner from an overlap, but the ball went into touch. In the dying moments we ran the ball into their '22' and a maul formed from which we scored a try. Both Alex Wilkinson and Charlie Saxby had their hands on the ball so they are joint scorers! Man-of-the-match Tom converted to make the final score 19-5.

I am extremely pleased with our performance and whatever happens with the rest of the season we have a win to celebrate.  The boys played with determination and they were much more organised. At last they are putting the ideas from the coaching sessions into practice. Now we have Papplewick to look forward to!

The team: Harry Baldock; Oscar Gaff; Eoin O'Kane; Charlie Saxby; Tom Newland (c); Lewis Riddell; Jonny Cope; Max Chawner-Davis; Alex Wilkinson; Charlie Riddell; Odise Vila; Matthew Stuart.

Match 3 - Saturday, 6th October

Colts C v Windlesham House: LOST 0-17

This was an exciting and tight game with both teams evenly matched. We conceded two tries in the first half, but the failure of Windlesham to convert them kept us in the game. In the second half we made several advances into their '22' and we should have scored at least one try. Unfortunately we conceded a soft converted try right at the end. Our new recruits to the team, Robin Vonchek, Matthew Stuart and Saran Brar played well.

This was a better performance than our last match, but I am disappointed that we did not score any points. We have some very tough fixtures ahead of us and therefore there is much to focus on in our games sessions.

The team: Harry Baldock; Noah Walton; Oscar Gaff; Eoin O'Kane; Charlie Saxby; Tom Newland (c); Lewis Riddell; Max Chawner-Davis; Alex Wilkinson; Charlie Riddell; Matthew Stuart; Saran Brar; Robin Vonchek; Reece Williams.

Match 2 - Wednesday, 26th September

Colts C IX v The Oratory: LOST 0-55

This was a very disappointing result. After the excitement of last week, we were up against a fast and skilful Under 10A side. The match had no kicking (an area we did well in against Cranleigh) and we did not capitalise on our size and weight advantage. The Oratory played some beautiful rugby at times and their handling, running and passing were first-rate. We never gave up and we did venture into their '22' a couple of times, but we never came close to scoring. The pick of our players was Charlie Saxby.

Hopefuly we can put this result behind us and use the next six games sessions to focus on our next match.

The team: Harry Baldock; Noah Walton; Oscar Gaff; Eoin O'Kane; Reece Williams; Charlie Saxby; Tom Newland (c); Odise Vila; Max Chawner-Davis; Alex Wilkinson; Charlie Riddell.

Match 1 - Wednesday, 19th September

Colts C v Cranleigh: 14-14 DRAW (T: Reece Williams 2; C: Tom Newland 2)

This was a very exciting game, with the result in the balance until the final whistle. Eagle House had the better of the first half. Charlie Saxby was unlucky not to score a try early on; he was tackled on the Cranleigh line which caused him to drop the ball. Reece Williams scored two tries, the first due to his speed on the wing and the second due to him winning the chase to the ball after Tom Newland's kick. Tom converted both tries. Cranleigh scored before half time, making the score 14-7. In the second half Cranleigh began to penetrate inside our half and they scored a good try in the corner, their player beating several of our tacklers in the process. This was converted to level the score. Reece came close to scoring twice more, but both times he put a foot into touch. In the dying moments we managed to get into the Cranleigh '22' and we attempted to 'maul' the ball over the line, but to no avail.

I am pleased with the draw. We played some flowing rugby and our passing was good. We won nearly all the scrums and made some good tackles. On the negative side, some of our players got the ball and ran backwards, thus losing territory and there were too many wayward tackles. Hopefully we can improve in these areas as the season progresses. The team played with a good spirit and appeared to enjoy themselves.

The 'Ouch Award' for the most tackled player goes to Charlie Saxby!

The team: Harry Baldock; Daniel Cook; Noah Walton; Oscar Gaff; Eoin O'Kane; Reece Williams; Charlie Saxby; Tom Newland (c); Lewis Riddell; Jonny Cope; Max Chawner-Davis; Odise Vila; Alex Wilkinson.
