Wednesday 17th September v's Cranleigh (home)
Won 11 - 1
(Ella 5, Sophie 3, Emily 2, Josie 1)
Team: Ella Dow, Maeve Hutchinson, Amynta Rimmer, Emily Anichebe, Sophie Bignell-Edwards, Charlotte Evershed, Josie Lunnon
Rotation Pattern: Scorer - GA - GD - Time Keeper - C - GS - GK -
With 7 girls in year 4, the U9s had been unable to have a practice run of this 5-a-side version of the game. Nevertheless, the skills taught in games lessons proved to be very effective as within 1 minute we had scored our first goal and it soon seemed that match practice was not that essential! The combination of Josie (C), Emily (GA) and Ella (GS) in the first quarter was formidable, and we were soon winning 5-0 with less than 6 minutes played. All the Eagle House players were moving into spaces to receive the ball and were marking closely when defending. The second quarter saw Charlotte and Sophie take to the court for the first time at Eagle House. Both players were an asset to the team and Charlotte in particular worked very hard in our semi-circle. During the second quarter Josie added another goal to the score sheet, leaving the score 6-0 at half time.
In the second half, Maeve showed far more confidence in her position as centre, helping move the ball down the court. Sophie (GS) and Amynta (GA) worked very well as a team in the goal third with Maeve to score a further 3 goals. Cranleigh began to gain confidence in the final quarter of the match and the teams started to feel more evenly matched. Despite this, the U9s remained focused and Ella's excellent shooting skills resulted in two further goals for Eagle House.
This was a great start to the season girls and I look forward to more of the same! Thank you so much to all those who came along to offer their support to the girls. It is very much appreciated.
Thursday 9th October v's St. Piran's (home)
Lost 9 - 2
Team: Ella Dow, Maeve Hutchinson, Amynta Rimmer, Emily Anichebe, Sophie Bignell-Edwards, Charlotte Evershed, Josie Lunnon
Rotation Pattern: Scorer - GA - GD - Time Keeper - C - GS - GK -
Having a few weeks without matches enabled the U9s to work hard on several aspects of their play. They took great advantage of the extra games sessions available to develop their ability to use the whole court, as well as mark the opposition effectively. Training matches have shown a huge improvement in match play and therefore today's result should not dishearten the team.
Playing a match on a Thursday afternoon after a full day of lessons certainly took its toll on the young players. Weary after a hard day of work, they struggled to execute the skills that they had performed so well just the day before. With a return to Wednesday matches next week, let's hope the routine enables the players to really show what they can do.
Well done girls, especially for showing such a positive attitude at the end of the game. 'We lost, but it didn't matter because we all had fun!' was the best quote I heard during match tea!
Wednesday 15th October v's St. Andrew's Pangbourne (away)
Lost 10 - 0
Team: Ella Dow, Maeve Hutchinson, Amynta Rimmer, Emily Anichebe, Sophie Bignell-Edwards, Charlotte Evershed, Josie Lunnon
Rotation Pattern: Scorer - GA - GD - Time Keeper - C - GS - GK -
Filled with excitement, the U9 team stepped off the bus and were full of confidence for the challenge ahead. Emily took the lead as captain and the team were soon warming up sensibly. Once the game was underway, we did not gain possession of the ball from any centre pass during the first quarter and therefore we were constantly on the defense. With some excellent shooting skills from St. Andrew's, the score was soon 5-0 against us. The Eagle House girls were being far too polite and relaxed, allowing St. Andrew's to take control of the game, grabbing the ball with ease, whilst we were taking the role of spectators!
The girls showed a great deal more determination in the second quarter - only allowing 2 more goals to be added to St. Andrew's score sheet. More crucially we were gaining possession of the ball, and remembering to mark when in defense as well as look for spaces when in attack.
During the final two quarters our confidence came back and the girls demonstrated the level of play that I have come to expect from our training sessions. The answer for our next match - 6 quarters of course!
Wednesday 3rd December
White House (home)
Won 5 - 1
Team: Ella Dow, Maeve Hutchinson, Amynta Rimmer, Emily Anichebe, Sophie Bignell-Edwards, Charlotte Evershed, Josie Lunnon
Rotation Pattern: Scorer - GA - GD - Time Keeper - C - GS - GK -
What an excellent end to a great term of netball! The late start meant that the U9s would have been well warmed-up for the match against the White House, had it not been a FREEZING cold afternoon. Nevertheless, this being our last match of the term the girls were determined to show what they had learned. Great passing, great marking and excellent use of the whole court meant that we were certainly in control of the game. The girls have all come a long way since September and thoroughly deserved this win.
I have really enjoyed coaching you all this term and wish you all every success next term - I may even try and pop outside to catch some of your home matches! Good luck and go for it!
Wednesday 21st January
The Oratory (Home)
4 - 4 Draw
Emily (2), Charlotte (1) Ella (1)
Team: Ella Dow, Maeve Hutchinson, Amynta Rimmer, Emily Anichebe, Sophie Bignell-Edwards, Charlotte Evershed, Josie Lunnon
Rotation Pattern: Scorer - GA - GD - Time Keeper - C - GS - GK -
U9’s you should all be very proud of yourselves. Today's match against Oratory was a very well played and contested match. You demonstrated everything you have learnt and practiced over the last two weeks. Those of you who played Centre made a tremendous effort to “drive” the ball up court and then finished off with an accurate strong pass into your shooters. Excellent team work between all of the attacking players helped us take a 3-0 lead at half time.
Our third quarter was not the best display of ball skills and unfortunately we did not manage to convert our attempts at shooting. We also all looked a bit muddled and often crowded around the ball instead of looking for a space. Oratory had one shot in this quarter and scored.
An interception by Sophie at the beginning of the last quarter, with good movement in the circle by Josie and a fabulous long range shot by Ella saw Eagle House score one more goal. However Oratory had saved their best till last and fed their tall GS very well who scored three out of her five shots.
A special mention for Charlotte who was outstanding throughout the whole game, I lost count on the number of interceptions she made – well done Charlotte!
Eagle House U9's V Daneshill - HOCKEY
Wednesday 28th January 2008
Venue: Wellington College
Sophie (2) Holly (1)
Team: Ella Dow, Maeve Hutchinson, Amynta Rimmer, Emily Anichebe, Sophie Bignell-Edwards, Charlotte Evershed, Josie Lunnon, Holly Wright, Zara Anichebe
Considering we are a fairly inexperienced hockey team all the girls played exceptionally well and should be really pleased with themselves. Daneshill and Eagle House were very evenly matched in their balls skills and I am really pleased to say that everyone went in hard on their tackles with their sticks down and never once backed off a challenge.
Emily was outstanding in defence and kept in position on the backline the whole game and stopped many of Daneshills opportunities on goal.
Our three goals were made when we had a good strong pass out of defence; we kept in our channels (using the whole width of the pitch) and ran down the line. Well done to both Holly (1) and Sophie (2) who scored our goals.
Thank you to all the parents who braved the rain to come and watch the girls.
Wednesday 11th February
U9’s High Five Festival 2009
Section Winners
Team: Maeve Hutchinson, Sophie Bignell-Edwards, Josephine Lunnon, Charlotte Evershed, Emily Anichebe, Amynta Rimmer, & Ella Dow
Section C Teams: Whitegrove, St Michaels, White House Blue and Yateley Manor Manor. Each match was 6 minutes each way, with the girls rotating position at half time as well as at the start of each match.
After a very quick lunch, the girls were fantastic in getting themselves changed and organised quickly with a good warm-up in readiness for the start of the festival. Our first challenge was against St Michaels. This was clearly a team who had not played very much netball together before, and at first I think it confused the girls as they themselves looked a bit unsure, but they regained their confidence and remembered that they do know how to make space on court, throw the ball correctly, and most pleasing of all - knew how to shoot. Maeve was simply outstanding and should have got at least 3 points for her long range shot. EH won 7-0.
Whitegrove were harder competition, but excellent defence from Amynta and Josie meant that the ball never really got into their attacking circle, which gave our shooters many more opportunities to have a go and shoot. If we had managed to convert all our attempts on goal I am sure we would have won 30 – 0, instead it was just 1-0.
At the start of the next round EH were standing on court ready to play but White House Blue, were nowhere to be seen. So after a lot of running round, and 3 minutes of the match already gone, we tracked them down and started the match. This was a very strange game to watch and umpire. The girls on both teams seemed to be fairly unsettled and both sides were throwing the ball to the opposition and generally couldn’t catch and hold onto the ball. Final score a 0-0 draw.
Our final game of the Festival was against Yateley Manor Blue. This is where Eagle House U9’s looked like a netball team. Each and everyone of the girls played brilliantly, they created space down the court and passed ahead of each other creating a great flow to the game. Great shooting by Sophie and Ella made it a 5-0 victory for EH.
All the girls and myself had great fun at this Festival, so a special thanks to Lesley-Anne Nolan for organising such a great afternoon of sport and of course to all the parents and grandparents of the girls who came along to support.
Wednesday 4th March - HOCKEY
Marlston House (Away)
2-2 Draw
Sophie (1) Sophie/Amynter (1)
Team: Maeve Hutchinson, Sophie Bignell-Edwards, Josephine Lunnon, Charlotte Evershed, Emily Anichebe, Amynta Rimmer, & Ella Dow
Most definitely a game of two halves and very strange weather. We took to the pitch with snow falling all around us which made it really hard work to get our new GK Charlotte all padded up. Marlston House from the beginning showed they had more experience and used all the space on the pitch to move the ball around. Eagle House spent most of the first half chasing and defending their goal. Charlotte did a great job of kicking the ball off her line and all the practice Emily has had has obviously paid off as she was hitting out some tremendous balls from defence – Well done Emily! At half time it was 2-0 to Marlston.
In the second half it was a complete turn-around. Both Sophie and Josie realised what dynamos they could be and found their confidence and went in strong on all their tackles and started winning the ball. Eagle House pushed themselves forward and created many opportunities with a free run at goal. Accurate passing to each other as they ran up the pitch provided Sophie with her first attempt at goal- which she took and scored a magnificent strike.
With the clock running down Marlston were charging towards EH goal but Maeve stepped forward, stick down and cleared the ball from the circle, out towards Amynter. Ella took control and dribbled into our attacking circle and then a very messy goal mouth struggle saw us draw level. Nobody was sure who scored but I am really pleased we did as we thoroughly deserved a draw. Final score 2-2.
Thank you to Mums and Dads who came all that way to support your girls and finally thank you to the weather as the snow stopped and the sun shine shone. Well played girls.
Wednesday 18th March
Bishopsgate (Home)
Won 4 – 3
Ella 2, Sophie 1, Amynta 1
Team: Maeve Hutchinson (Captain), Sophie Bignell-Edwards, Josephine Lunnon, Charlotte Evershed, Emily Anichebe, Amynta Rimmer, & Ella Dow
The excitement was very high in the U9 team – this was their last netball match together, the sun was shining and most importantly they had their school disco that evening. Previous encounters with Bishopsgate have not been too fruitful for EH, however as soon as the girls got focused they prepared themselves perfectly with a great warm up.
In every match I hope to spot something from each of the girls that we have practised in our previous lessons, and usually you may get the odd moment from 1 or 2 them, but today ALL of the girls were just simply fantastic!!!
Josie, Amynta, Emily & Sopie – I lost count at the number of interceptions you all made, the defence at both ends of the court was wonderful to watch.
Maeve, Charlotte & Josie – you three were particularly good at creating space on the court after you had passed the ball. Good strong passing and then moving into space helped us move the ball down the court into the circle very quickly.
Ella, Sophie & Amynta – Great shooting girls! Well done Ella see what happens when you practice….. 2 goals from 3 attempts in the first half.
It really has been lots of fun coaching you this term and you should give yourselves a big pat on the back as you thoroughly deserved to win. Thank you to all the parents who came to watch, and finally a big goodbye and good luck to Maeve.
