Match 1    A Team versus  Edgeborough

Lost 6 - 5

We finally opened our season with glorious sunshine and the prospect of some fast flowing hockey.  This was Edgeborough’s opening game and all was set for a classic with expectations high and even higher levels of enthusiasm!  In my experience, Eagle House U9’s often start slow and then gear up as the game unfolds.  Not this team, we put away a good early goal which set the pace.  Edgeborough responded with 2 in return and then we swapped goals in end-to-end action.  The half-time score was 3 apiece and where Edgborough had the edge on skill, we equalled with sheer commitment.

The second half opened with 2 quick goals from Edgeborough and at this point I wondered if our heads would go down as we still had 18 minutes to play.  However, our defence was fierce and we kept out 10 minutes of quite relentless attacking before mounting a good fightback.  The final score was 5-6 to Edgeborough and was certainly a fair result.  Well done to all the boys for a great game.

Harry Waters

Had a great day, defending off the line!  He kept out near certain goals and never gave up.  With Harry, the game would have run away from us very quickly!

Joseph Britz

Joseph threw himself at attackers which often led to them making mistakes.  This often gave our midfield players time to come back saving goals.

Alex McClelland

Alex has great speed and showed this by pushing the ball into space and chasing through their midfield.  When defending, he gave up on nothing and harassed players into making mistakes.

Tatsuhito Matsumoto

Tatsu has good stick control and as the centre-half, this gave him time to control the ball and to release both Alex and Ben to his sides.  A level thinking player who read the game well.

Ben Howard

Ben is a real fighter!  If there is a 50:50 ball, he makes it his.  His energy up and down the field was immense.  Great job!

Ruairidh Whelan

Ru fought tirelessly up the right wing putting in well timed and accurate crosses that allowed Henry time and space to do the business!  Great support play.

Henry South

Henry was man of the match scoring 4 goals!  We had far fewer chances than Edgeborough but Henry took all of them with pin-point accuracy and great tenacity.  Great play!
