The team felt that they should have won many of their lost games as the score was very close and the boys played really well.  Everyone worked hard as team, tried their best and enjoyed the tournament immensely.

Wednesday 17th January v St Andrew's, Woking

U9 A

What fun we had finding our way to St Andrew's...can I start by thanking Mrs Robinson for acting as our Sat Nav despite being sent around the houses as various conflicting stories came in as to where we were actually playing!

Now to the action!  We started with a bang...adapting well to playing off side boards and a smaller pitch.  Zeus provided good service into the D with Adam Bailey and Adam Robinson offering some powerful shots on goal.  We quickly went 2 goals up and looked like scoring more.  However, St Andrew's came back strongly after half time and won the game 5 - 3.  This offered us a great learning experience and if nothing else, we now know that sides can and will come back at us despite an early lead!

Saturday 3rd February v Cranleigh

U9 A

This was our first match on grass and we were keen to stick to our game-plan of fast passing and quick movement off the ball!  From the whistle 7 players put their heart and soul into the game.  Zeus played well up the right wing, crossing with good power.  Adam Bailey held his position and managed to lose his marker on numerous occasions which led to the only goal of the game.  Adam Robinson played well in the midfield, linking well with both Ben and George.  The Cranleigh striker drifted further and further into his own half as he became ever more frustrated with the exceptional cover tackling that was coming from James.  Charles Saxby kept goal with confidence, clearing the ball when needed.

All credit to the Cranleigh keeper who managed to save several great shots from our attacks up the right side.  This was one of the best games I have seen an U9 team play...onwards and upwards!

Wednesday 7th February v Hoe Bridge

U9 A

Following our match last week on grass we were looking forward to playing at Wellington on their new astro.  However, we made a slow start and Hoe Bridge quickly knocked in 2 quick goals whilst we warmed up!  This was certainly the slowest start that we have made and unfortunately it would affect that final result!  We started our scoring with a good cross from Zeus that was flicked past the keeper by Adam Bailey.  We equalised with an incredible shot from Zeus that was taken from a very tight angle but beat the keeper with sheer power!

In the second half we certainly woke up and showed more of our potential, competing with more fight for the 50:50 ball.  Nevertheless, Hoe Bridge were certainly the better team on the day and we finished 4 - 3 down with some good lessons learned!  Roll on the next match!

Wednesday 21st February v Aldro

U9 A

Another home game at Wellington, hopefully with lessons learned as to how tricky the surface can be compared to the fast All-Weather.  Aldro arrived having started their Hockey season on Monday, feeling a touch apprehensive.  However, they certainly settled into the game faster than us and looked more and more dangerous as the first half flew by.  Following some casual defence, and a great strike, Aldro drew first blood!  Their close passing and awareness of space was better than ours and they were unfortunate not to score more goals.

The oranges hit the mark and we certainly came out in the second half displaying more of the hockey that we are capable of playing.  Adam Robinson whacked in a ferocious goal that flew past the keeper!  Unfortunately Aldro came at us again and with some excellent fast passing, they put another goal in the net.  However, our game plan came together with some wonderful crosses come from Zeus.  Adam Bailey managed to connect with one such strike and we were level at the end of the game.

Well done to our boys for getting back into the game.  However, credit to Aldro for their flying start and their excellent interplay...we will have to up our game before meet again!
