SEASON REVIEW

The Colts B team has had another excellent season. The boys have improved their basic hockey skills and their tactical awareness and they have fostered an excellent team spirit. I have enjoyed coaching the boys and I hope they represent the school in hockey matches next year.

Match 8 - Eagle House v New College I

LOST 1-2 (Lewis Riddell)

The tournament was played on Astro. It was an exciting and frenetic afternoon, with each match lasting seven minutes one-way and there was only a nine minute gap between matches. Most of the other schools in the tournament concentrate on seven-a-side hockey for their entire season and were therefore used to the faster pace of the game. We faced some tough opposition in our group, especially Magdalen College who were the overall winners of the tournament for the second year running, and therefore I am pleased that we came away with a 'positive balance' of results. We played some good hockey during the afternoon and the boys really enjoyed themselves.

Match 6 - Wednesday, 25th February - Eagle House v Hall Grove

WON 3-0 (Brendon Parvess, Alvaro Rivas, Harry Rees)

The match was played on Main Field. Playing hockey on grass is never easy, but both teams settled into the game quickly. Hall Grove had the upper hand for the opening five minutes until we began to dominate. Ben Moore and the impressive Lewis Riddell both hit the post (every match!) before Brendon Parvess scored the opening goal. The half-time score was 1-0. We played some excellent hockey in the second half and scored two more goals through Alvaro Rivas (the 'goal of the season') and Harry Rees. Hall Grove ventured into our 'D' a few times and could have scored, but we were the better team and deserved our victory.

It is a shame that this was our last match of the season, as we are just reaching our peak as a team. We now have the tournament at the Dragon next Wednesday to look forward to.

Match 5 - Wednesday, 11th February - Eagle House v St Andrew's Woking

WON 2-1 (Brendon Parvess, Harry Rees)

The match was played on the Astro at Goldsworth Park. Despite not having played a match for two weeks, we began positively and attacked the St Andrew's 'D'. After some sustained pressure we managed to score our first goal of the season. Lewis Riddell took the ball to the right hand side of the 'D' and crossed to Brendon Parvess, who slotted-in the goal from close range. We had another chance to score when Ali Tilmouth played the ball into the 'D' only to hit the post. The half-time score was 1-0. At the start of the second half we dominated much of the play and Harry Rees scored our second goal from close range. Unfortunately we went to sleep after the restart and allowed St Andrew's to score an easy goal. Luckily this was a temporary blip and we managed to dominate the rest of the game. Ali should have scored our third goal when he received a pass inside the 'D' with only the goalkeeper to beat, but once again he hit the post - this is becoming a notable feature of our season!

This was a good team performance and I hope that we can build upon our success and record another victory in our final match against Hall Grove.

Match 4 - Saturday, 7th February - Eagle House v Cranleigh

CANCELLED

Match 3 - Wednesday, 4th February - Eagle House v Hoe Bridge

CANCELLED

Match 2 - Wednesday, 28th January - Eagle House v Parkside

LOST 0-1

The match was played on the Surbiton Hockey Club Astro. Both sides had scoring chances in the first half, but were denied by some resolute defending. The half-time score was 0-0. In the eventful second half, a shot from Brendon Parvess once again hit the post and went out, we conceded a penalty which Hal Quinn saved with some ease and, unfortunately, Parkside scored a goal from close-range. We tried our best to equalise, but to no avail.

This was our first defeat since the 2007 season. However, Parkside are usually our strongest opposition and therefore 0-1 is not a bad result. We are playing some good hockey at the moment and the team is beginning to take shape.

Match 1 - Wednesday, 21st January - Eagle House v Caldicott

DREW 0-0

The match was played on the new Wellington Astro. The first match of the season is never easy and both teams took time to get into the game. Caldicott had the only short corner of the first half and we had a couple of scoring opportunities in their 'D'. We began to dominate in the exciting second half and we had several scoring chances, most notably a shot from Brendon Parvess that hit the post and bounced out! Caldicott ventured into our 'D' a couple of times, but our resolute defending prevented them from scoring.

Considering that we were playing a school with many more boys to choose from, a draw is a pleasing result. Our unbeaten run from last season continues, but we will have to raise our game and make the most of any chances against Parkside next week.
