RESULTS
Wednesday 25th February
v Hall Grove (Away)
Won 6 - 3
A great result and above all a great team performance. We dominated much of the game, in particular the first half, but to Hall Groves credit just as we looked to pull away they snatched a goal back. Following the game at Parkside we needed to pass and support each other faster and when in possession take on and run at the opposition. We did this well particularly down the right wing where Toby and TomSurrall linked well together with Toby attacking on the outside before looking to pull the ball back across the goal. We could and should have scored more but because we attacked mainly down the right side the game became squashed on one side of the field. In the second half we looked to stretch the play working both sides of the pitch, this we achieved and the game became more open and very entertaining to watch. Hall Grove too improved and competed better as the game went on.
Defensively we looked sharper with Nat and Johnny working hard in the middle but at times they did more support from mid-field.
In the end the score finished 6 - 3 with 2 goals each from Richard Morgan and Toby Barnard and one each for Tom Cracknell and Max Medlock but overall hockey was the winner on the day . Well done Boys.
Wednesday 29th January
v Parkside (Away)
Lost 1 - 4
A good game in which we contributed much especially from an attacking perspective. Some good interpassing between Tom, Toby and Richard down the right-side saw us create opportunities and good positions but without really threating the Parkside goal. Defencively we were disappointing at times playing with little initiative and anticipation, too often leaving Max with no protection or support in goal. You can not leave 2 players unmarked in the 'D' and not expect to be punished. We did this, not once but three times.
We started well and it was from 2 breakaways that Parkside punished us to take a 2-0 lead. We fought back and Richard scored a good goal, well he would have had the umpire played advantage. Fortunately Luke scrambled the ball in the net from the resulting short corner. 1 -2 at half-time but confidence was high. We talked about working harder, playing with greater energy and intensity and better organisation at the back.
In the second half we showed our lack of experiance and match practice. It was Parside who played with greater intensity with clever touches and more power. We seemed to run out of ideas and struggled to get the ball out of defence. We still competed hard in mod-field with Joab, Jonathan and Dominic but 2 more Parkside goals put the game beyond us.
Still lots of positives and things to work on if we the chance of another practice.
Wednesday 21st January
v Caldicott (Away)
3rd VII Won 5 - 2
4th V11 Won 1- 0
What a great start to the hockey season!. 2 well earned victories played on the small Caldicott astro. The pitch leant itself to the more skillful players with deft touches , control and accurate passing far more effective than big hard hitting.
The 3rd VII improved as the match went on. Some great passing from the back (Nathaniel and Joab)through midfield Jonathan and Tom)to the attack (Richard and Toby) saw us create opportunities but it was Caldicott who took the lead from a short corner. We fought back well and and through good interplay and quick shooting we took a deserved lead with goals from Richard and Toby.On the stroke of half-time Caldicott equalized.
In the second half we dominated possession and looked very skillful and composed at times. Further pressure saw 2 more goals from Toby and one from Tom and the game ended with a convincing 5 - 2 win.
The 4th VII too played well if some of the touches lacked the pace and accuracy shown by the 3rd VII. Nevertheless we played hard working for each other. Ruari and Felix solid in defence, Taylor and Luke working hard to link up with George and Daniel in attack. We had the best of the territory and possession but it was difficult to see were a goal would come until George popped up to deftly finish of a quick attack just before half-time. We kept working hard and although Caldicott pressed hard towards the end we kept a clean sheet to win 1 - 0.
Well done to Max who kept goal in both games looking confident dominating the D stopping and kicking out the ball.
Overall it was a successful and enjoyable afternoon promising much for the rest of the season. Well done boys.
