Sixth Match versus Highfield (Away) Wednesday 29th June
(Pairs Cricket. 21 overs aside. starting score of 200)
Eagle House 174
Highfield 306
Eagle House began the match batting and the opening pair made a strong and good start. Yet quite a few of the following bats men were not up to the standard of the openers and so many wickets fell and too many wrong decisions were made which ended up in many a stumping. Eagle House were just not aggressive or decisive enough at the crease. Some very good bowling and excellent fielding ensured a constant fall of wickets. Highfield were a well drilled and thoughtful outfit who were well aware of how to play this type of pairs cricket.
Nevertheless once out on the field Eagle House raised their game with some very aggressive and thoughtful bowling. Gradually the wickets began to fall until the latter batsmen were able to stop the rot. Though Highfield looked in command at the start of their innings, there was a stage when they began to wobble and the game looked for a few overs to be in the balance. What Eagle House lacked in skill was always outbalanced by their enthusiasm.
Hopefully the squad will learn a lot from this match, like the need for more aggression and thoughtfulness at the crease. The calling has to be correct as the aim is to score runs quickly. The fielding has to have precision with strong and more accurate throws being made. Nothing should be able to reach the boundary as there are so many players on the field.
Though this is the final match of the season, there is potential in this side. There is a keenness and enthusiasm about the squad which will help it to become better.

With it being the last match before half term, Eagle House took the opportunity to play all 14 boys from Year 4 in their first home fixture against a strong Yateley Manor team. Again Harry King won the toss and decided to bat first in excellent conditions.
It was clearly not going to be the Eagle's day as Max Hindley was excellently caught behind off the first ball of the match and it was tough going from then on. With wickets falling at regular intervals during the first half of the innings the score dipped to a low of 170 before slowly working its way back up above 200 to a final position of 210.
The Yateley Manor side bowled and fielded with enthusiasm and no lack of skill and it was to the credit of some of the Eagle House team that they did not lose their wickets. The standout pairs were Lewis and Christian (14 runs) and Max McCarthy and Thomas (10 runs) as they, plus Will and Christopher, didn't lose a wicket in the final eight overs of the innings.
So a modest score of 210 was never going to be enough, and so it proved, as Yateley comfortably reached 380 through some positive running and ruthlessly punishing anything off target. Notable bowling performances from Harry, Jack and Max McCarthy were great to see, as were wickets for Chris and James (his first!)
Scores:
Eagle House: 210 - (Lewis Sharp & Christian Gale 14; Max McCarthy & Thomas Ogilvie 10)
Yateley Manor: 380 - (Jack Borthwick 2 for 6; Harry King 1 for 0; Max McCarthy 1 for 9)
Result: Eagle House lost by 170 runs

Second Match versus Lambrook (Away) Saturday 7th May
(Pairs Cricket - 24 overs aside - Starting score of 200)
Team: Harry King (Capt); Jack Borthwick; Max McCarthy; Christopher Myers; Thomas Ogilvie; Seb Baldwin; Stephen Giannikas; Max Hindley; Max Rickard; Christian Gale; Will Brown
On another beautiful sunny day the Eagles played their second match of the season away in the picturesque grounds at Lambrook. Unfortunately the team had to travel a man light due to injury and illness which only left 11 fit players from the 14 available in the year group.
Lambrook won the toss and decided to field first, which gave Eagle House the opportunity to post a total. Harry and Thomas opened the batting and struggled to get going against some very accurate bowling and some fantastic fielding. Two brilliant catches in the deep stopped the ball reaching the boundary and resulted in ten runs being taken off the score (199). Jack and Chris were next in and they also found the going tough, regularly losing wickets and were unable to progress the score so that the total was 197 after eight overs. The two Max's, Hindley and Rickard, also lost a couple of wickets, but managed to start hitting the big shots and put on 13 runs to take the halfway score into positive figures at 210 after 12-overs.
This provided a platform for the next two pairs to start to attack the bowling and take advantage of some tiring players in the field. Seb and Stephen hit seven 4s in their innings to put on a fantastic 27 runs (237) and this total was matched by Max McCarthy and Will Brown who managed four boundaries to fire the Eagle's score up to 264 after 20 overs. With Harry coming in again to partner Christian the score was at a very respectable 291 with two balls left, but two wickets lost in those final two balls reduced the total to 281 and the momentum was back with Lambrook.
Lambrook's first pair also struggled to get the bowling away and three lost wickets kept them down to just 206 after four overs with Thomas taking two wickets in his first over. Their second pair took advantage of some loose bowling and plenty of extras to add 28 runs to the total with seemingly little concern (234). Some exceptional fielding from Jack to hit the stumps twice for two run outs and a brilliant reaction catch from Max Hindley restricted their third pair to only nine runs and a total of 243 after 12-overs.
As tea was taken the game was even poised, but unfortunately the break didn't help the Eagles. Lambrook restarted their innings confidently to move past the winning target with partnerships of 23, 20 and 30 to finish on 316. Positives for Eagle House were wickets for Jack, Will, Harry, Max McCarthy and Christian as the bowling definitely improved from the first match.
An enjoyable match which, although ultimately ended in a loss, showed signs that the team were making progress. More determination to protect their wickets (and five runs) is needed now and to realise that every ball cannot be smashed to the boundary!
Scores:
Eagle House: 281 - (Stephen Giannikas & Seb Baldwin 27; Max McCarthy & Will Brown 27)
Lambrook: 316 - (Thomas Ogilvie 2 for -1; Harry King 1 for -3; Max McCarthy 1 for 3)
Result: Eagle House lost by 35 runs
First Match versus Cranleigh (Away) Wednesday 4th May
(Pairs Cricket - 24 overs aside - Starting score of 200)
Team: Harry King (Capt); Jack Borthwick; Max McCarthy; Christopher Myers; Thomas Ogilvie; Seb Baldwin; Stephen Giannikas; Max Hindley; Lewis Sharp; Max Rickard; Christian Gale; Will Brown
Even though the Eagle House Under-9 cricket team had only had one training session prior to their first match there was a lot of confidence (or rather lots of noise) as the boys travelled down to play away at Cranleigh. The sun was shining and and the initial signs were all good as Harry won the first toss of the season and decided that Eagle House would bat first.
Harry and Lewis opened the batting and made a steady start against some quality bowling, managing to keep their wickets intact and put on 10 valuable runs (210). Jack and Chris were next in and found the going a little easier as they made 19 runs from their four overs (219). Eagle House's third pair were Max Rickard and Christian and they were unlucky to come up against Cranleigh's best bowler who took a number of wickets in his two overs, regularly hitting the stumps and making scoring extremely difficult. This left the Eagles halfway score at 205 after 12-overs.
Pair number four were Max Hindley and Thomas and they came out and played really positively, hitting the ball to the boundary and looking for quick singles. Max was in fine form and helped the partnership to put on 27 runs and boost the overall total to 232 after 15 overs. Seb and Stephen continued to keep the scoring rate high by taking advantage of some loose bowling and put another 20 runs on the Eagle House total (252). The final pair were Max McCarthy and Will who finished the innings off in some style. Max went after the bowling from his first ball hitting it confidently to the boundary and continued to play in the same manner. Max was well supported by Will and they managed to add another 23 runs to the overall total and end the innings with 275 runs on the board.
Cranleigh's innings also started slowly, mainly due to some excellent bowling by Harry who took two wickets and reduced the score by seven runs. The first pair only managed to add three runs, but the second pair found life easier and added 24 runs to the total of 227 after 8-overs. Jack and Chris both took one wicket each to keep the run rate down. Pair three hit a very respectable 28 runs off their four overs, which made the halfway score 253 after 12-overs.
Cranleigh's fourth pair added a steady 18-runs and this would have been far more had Thomas not bowled superbly to take two much needed wickets. With the winning post in sight it took an inspired spell of bowling by Stephen, who took three wickets in his two overs and kept their score down to 269 and gave the Eagles a small chance of winning. The last pair managed to see out Max McCarthy's overs without losing a wicket, even though the ball regularly beat the bat and, somehow, all three stumps. Cranleigh finished on 289, just 14-runs ahead of the target and left the Eagles thinking of what might have been.
Scores:
Eagle House: 275 - (Max Hindley & Thomas Ogilvie 27; Max McCarthy & Will Brown 23)
Cranleigh: 289 - (Stephen Giannikas 3 for -10; Harry King 2 for -7; Thomas Ogilvie 2 for 3)
Result: Eagle House lost by 14 runs
