Versus St Andrews(Home) Berkshire Cup semi-final (20 Overs aside)
Due to the weather this game was played over 2 days. It started on Tuesday 3rd July when Jonny dutifully won the toss and put the opposition in to bat. At the half-way point St Andrews were 35 for 4 even though we had struggled with our bowling as Dougie Moffat was not 100% and Justin Parvess went off injured. St Andrews fought back well and when play was called off due to lightning and rain St Andrews were 92 for 4 off 17.1 overs.
Play continued on Thursday morning and a further 19 runs were added off the last 17 balls for the loss of 1 wicket. Eagle House started badly in the face of some accurate bowling and were soon 2 for 2 with both openers out. Dougie Moffat was also unfortunate to lose his wicketand although Jake Aungier and JJ Dewes put on 40 runs together, wickets then fell regularly and we were without the services of Haider Rubbani who was ill and were 9 wickets down and 34 runs adrift at the beginning of the 17th over.
Nevertheless the team can look with pride on a very good season in which 13 matches were played (only the one cancellation due to the weather).4 were won , 3 were drawn and 6 were lost but this does not tell the story of an inexperienced team who always fought hard and for each other, providing in the process some memorable moments for the coach and for our faithful band of supportive parents. The one sad note of the season was the tragic death of our groundsman Barry Ranger who over the years has provided us with some excellent wickets.
Scores:
St Andrews 111 for 5 ((Jake Aungier 2 for 13; Jonny Burgin 2 for 21)
Eagle House 77 for 9 off 16 overs (JJ Dewes 28; Jake Aungier 25)

VersusPridwin/The Ridge(Home) Thursday 28th June 35 overs aside
At last we lost the toss and the visitors touring under the name of the Johannesburg Cubs decided to bat. After the lacklustre performance of the day before we were much better and tight bowling was backed by some excellent fielding. Zac Bigley took a terrific head high catch at slip and suffered a blood nose for his efforts but this was typical of a much more determined performance. The bowlers all bowled well and Justin Parvess from the Colts picked up 2 good wickets. The final total of 138 was deemed to be gettable though the opposition did contain 1 or 2 very big and athletic looking boys who turned out be opening bowlers who were a yard quicker than anything that we normally face on our circuit. After the first over dismissal of Jonny Burgin Luke Boobbyer and Dougie Moffat fought hard with Luke having to weather a particularly painful blow at the start of his innings. Dougie played some good shots as did Jake Aungier who struck a superb straight 6 into the top of the hedge but although 6 batsmen scored between 10 and 21, no one was able to go on and make a match winning score. The one big disappointment was more suicidal running between wickets which saw the end of Jake Aungier who was threatening to take the bowling apart and some poor shot selection which was reminiscent of the day before. Nevertheless it was an entertaining game watched by many parents including 35 South Africans and the weather was good enough to allow us all to enjoy a barbeque at the end of the match.

Versus Lambrook-Haileybury(Away) Wednesday 27th June
I do not think that I have ever had a captain over the last 30 years of taking cricket teams who has won the toss so consistently, but this happened once again, and rather surprisingly given the amount of rain experienced over the last week, Jonny chose to bat. Although the pitch did play better than expected, there was a lot of assistance for the bowlers and our 2 leading batsmen Jonny Burgin and Dougie Moffat were soon back in the pavilion. Luke Boobbyer and JJ Dewes worked hard to rebuild the innings and put on 31 to take the score to 45 and hope was high that we could set a competitive total but the dismissal of Luke to a catch off a poor delivery and the senseless run out of JJ triggered a collapse and 53 for 3 became 54 for 7. Although the last 3 wickets added 20 runs, the final total of 74 was well below a competitive total. Amazingly the pattern of soft dismissals continued when Lambrook-Haileybury batted a sEagle House fought back and had the opposition 12 for 4 and then 25 for 6, the last wicket coming from a superb direct hit on the stumps from Tom Fowlie at extra cover. It looked like the game had swung our way, but a determined partnership of sensible batting saw Lambrook-Haileybury home with an unbeaten partnership of 51.

Match cancelled due to the weather.
After 10 1st X1 and 3 Under 12 A games we have finally been forced by the weather to cancel a match. It is incredible to me that in 22 years of teaching in drought stricken Zimbabwe, we always had several matches rained off in the cricket season, but here in wet soggy England it seems to rarely happen.
TWO REMINDERS:
1.Please be aware that we are likely to have to play our Berkshire Cup semi-final on Monday 25th June at home, the day we return to school. I am hoping any information that we get about this will be put on this page during the Activity week.
2. I need to know if 1st X1 parents are able to host a player from the touring team from Pridwin/The Ridge that we play on Thursday 28th June. You should have received a letter delivered by your son about this.
Versus Reading (Home) Monday 11th June Berkshire Cup Third Round
Jonny continued his success at winning the toss and inserted the opposition. All the bowlers hit the right channels from their first deliveries and Justin Parvess from the Colts A team who came into the team as a late replacement took the first wicket with a good one handed caught and bowled. This was in the 12th over after 4 catches had already gone down but only 48 runs were on the board at this point. The ground fielding was excellent and the commitment of the team was typified by Sam Dovey's dive on the boundary in an attempt to save a four. Unfortunately his shoulder connected with a pole and the injury was later to be confirmed as a fracture. We wish Sam a speedy recovery. James Sharples took a well judged low catch which redeemed him somewhat as he had dropped the simplest of the 4 chances earlier.Reading had wickets in hand and so picked up the scoring but a score of just over a hundred was below par.
Jonny Burgin and Luke Boobbyer started against some tight bowling with the former edging 3 boundaries (all along the ground in the first over he faced). Runs were difficult to come by and Luke perished in the seventh over when trying to force the pace. This brought Dougie Moffat to the crease and he and Jonny faced some anxious moments as the run rate began to creep up. To their credit, the pair did not panic and as their partnership developed their running between the wickets was excellent as they put pressure on the fielders and Eagle House were able to get home with 9 balls to spare.
Scores: Reading 102 for 3
Eagle House 105 for 1 (Dougie Moffat 51 not out; Jonny Burgin 34 not out)
Result: Eagle House won by 9 wickets

Colours have been awarded to Jonny Burgin, JJ Dewes and Dougie Moffat
Well done to the 3 of them.
Versus Aldro (Home) Saturday 19th May (30 Overs aside)
Once again Jonny won the toss and elected to bat. Throughout the innings there was a good contest between bat and ball. Although we were not able to dominate the bowling and get the run rate up to and beyond 5 an over, we did keep wickets intact and there were several useful partnerships with Jonny Burgin and JJ Dewes leading the way.
Aldro started their reply very positively and some well judged running between wickets saw the total reach 26 in the sixth over before the first wicket fell. Wickets then fell at regular intervals as several batsmen got starts but then got out. After an early dropped catch at slip, seven catches were taken, the last one a well judged tumbling catch at mid off by Zac Bigley. All 5 bowlers used bowled well and gave nothing away, (though there was still a liberal offering of wide balls) but it was Jake Aungier and Dougie Moffat who picked up all 10 wickets between them.
Scores:
Eagle House 134 for 4(Jonny Burgin 37; JJ Dewes 36 not out)
Aldro 104 all out ( Jake Aungier 6 for 15; Dougie Moffat 4 for 27)
Result: Eagle House won by 30 runs

Versus Crosfields (Home) Wednesday 16th May
This was another cold day (after the warmth that we had in April) for cricket and after winning the toss, we inserted the opposition. Once again the opening bowlers were on target and an early wicket put us on top, especially as the batsmen found it difficult to penetrate the field and only 25 were scored off the first 9 overs. the next 9 overs saw 64 runs as the bowlers struggled to bowl the right line and length and once again the wides column in the scorebook was fairly full, a total of 16 to-day. However to the team's credit, they did tighten up again and even though the batsmen were trying to get after the bowling so a declaration could be made, only 43 runs were scored off the final 11 overs.
A good declaration left Eagle House needing 131 to win off 24 overs. Unfortunately we were soon 5 for 2 during the second over but a fine third wicket partnership between Jonny Burgin and JJ Dewes of 63 brought us back into the game. With 9 overs to go 63 were needed and the game was very much on but the departure of the 2 inform batsmen gave the advantage back to Crosfields and tight bowling and fielding meant that a draw was the outcome though some fine shots from Sam Dovey and James Sharples took our final score past 100.
Scores;
Crosfields 130 for 6 (Sam Dovey 2 for 11; JJ Dewes 2 for 26)
Eagle House 103 for 4 (Jonny Burgin 46; JJ Dewes 21)
Result: Match drawn

Versus Reading Blue Coat Berkshire Under 13 Cup Match Tuesday 15th May 20 Overs aside
As we were awarded a walkover in the first round, this was a second round game. We lost the toss and the opposition decided to bat. The bowling was tight and was backed up by some fine fielding and after only 8 overs there were only 17 runs on the board ,the one wicket that fell was due to a fine piece of fielding from JJ Dewes who scored a direct hit on the stumps from cover. With wickets in hand the batsmen became more adventurous and 72 runs came off the next 10 overs but it was very disappointing to concede 30 runs off the last 2 overs. A total of 18 runs were given away in wides, (in other words we bowled 3 additional overs), which one can ill afford to do in any form of cricket.
Luke Boobbyer and Jonny Burgin started positively and played some attractive shots and when rain interrupted play at the end od the 13th over, we were 75 for 0. Although the field was now very damp, the opposition elected to play on, as we would have won the match if it had been abandoned at this point, as we were well ahead on run rate. Our opening partnership was broken with the score on 84, with Luke Boobbyer being unfortunate to miss out on what would have been a fine 50. Unfortunately the incoming batsmen played as if the game had already been won and with wickets now falling regularly, Reading Blue Coat began to believe that they could perhaps pull off the impossible and win the game. This was not to be, as cool heads now prevailed and we got home with an over to spare.
Scores:
Reading Blue Coat 109 for 4 (Jonny Burgin 2 for 21)
Eagle House 110 for 5 (Luke Boobbyer 49; Jonny Burgin 36)
Result: Eagle House won by 5 wickets
Team: Luke Boobbyer; Jonny Burgin (Capt) ; Dougie Moffat; JJ Dewes; Sam; Dovey;Jake Aungier ;Haider Rubbani; Zac Bigley;Alex Manton-Jones;James Sharples; Sam Peters;Ryan Chan (Scorer)
Versus Ludgrove (Home) Saturday 12th May 20 Overs aside
It was incredible that any cricket took place at all after a heavy down pour less than an hour before the start left the field very wet. We decided to play a 20 over aside match and after losing the toss we were in the field. Conditions were difficult for fielders in the slippery conditions, while the bowlers had to contend with using a wet ball. The batsmen did not have things their own way either as evidenced when one of the batsmen slipped in setting off for a second run and was run out by the length of the pitch. Once again our back up bowlers bowled too short and both sides of the wicket, so Ludgrove soon had a run rate of nearly 10 an over before the 10 over mark. Once again our bowling and fielding tightened up in the latter stages and the score was kept below the 150 mark.
Conditions were much better for the second half of the match, as the field was now dry and the Sun even appeared on occasions. Ludgrove took full advantage of this and their bowling and fielding were excellent which put the Eagle House batsmen under pressure; a good example was the direct hit on the stumps from near the boundary which ran out JJ Dewes going for a second run which appeared very much on. Too many batsmen got out trying to force the pace and only Jonny Burgin was able to build an innings of any substance. Although we were well beaten in the end, this inexperienced team is (I hope!) learning valuable lessons which will see more consistent performances in the field, particularly with 3 matches in the next 5 days.
Scores:
Ludgrove 148 for 7 (Dougie Moffat 2 for 32)
Eagle House 91 for 9 (Jonny Burgin 31)
Result: Eagle House lost by 57 runs
Team: Luke Boobbyer; Jonny Burgin (Capt) ; Dougie Moffat; JJ Dewes; Sam; Dovey;James Sharples; Jake Aungier ; Alex Manton-Jones; Haider Rubbani; Zac Bigley; Sam Peters;Ryan Chan (Scorer)
Versus Cranleigh (Away) Wednesday 9th May 30 Overs aside
After so many weeks of great cricketing weather, it was now time to endure a wet and cold afternoon. In spite of the conditions we made a good start in the field with the opening bowlers JJ Dewes and Dougie Moffat right on target and after their 8 over spell Cranleigh were 32 for 1. Unfortunately the next 3 overs leaked 41 runs as the number 3 bat launched an assault on the first change bowlers. A very well judged catchin the deep by JJ Dewes saw the end of him and Eagle House fought back to dismiss Cranleigh with one over remaining.
A target of 164 on a small field was gettable but we never got going, as both openers were unsettled by the pace of the opening bowler and soon back in the pavilion. For the first time this season Dougie Moffat failed and although Sam Dovey hit 5 cracking boundaries and James Sharples kept an end going, Eagle House were never in the hunt.
Scores:
Cranleigh 163 all out ( Dougie Moffat 4 for 27; JJ Dewes 2 for 17; Jonny Burgin 2 for 34)
Eagle House 114 all out (Sam Dovey 23; James Sharples 19)
Result: Eagle House lost by 49 runs

Versus Parkside (Home) Wednesday 2nd May
Once again Jonny Burgin won the toss but we were not able to repeat the good fielding and bowling performance of the previous Saturday. It was difficult to set a field with most of the bowlers bowling both sides of the wicket and Parkside raced along with the opening pair putting on 98. We did pick up wickets towards the end as they hit out, but the fielding was uninspiring and only JJ Dewes of the bowlers maintained a good line and length.
In reply Luke Boobbyer got us off to good start but when he perished in the 5th over the Parkside bowlers showed the consistency in line and length that we had lacked earlier and they were backed up by some excellent ground fielding. Although Jonny Burgin and Dougie Moffat were relatively untroubled in putting on 95 for the second wicket, we never threatened to mount a serious challenge on the opposition total.
Scores;
Parkside 178 for 8 (JJ Dewes 4 for 19)
Eagle House 124 for 3 (Dougie Moffat 55 not out; Jonny Burgin 40)
Result: Match Drawn
Team: Luke Boobbyer; Jonny Burgin (Capt) ; Dougie Moffat; JJ Dewes; Sam; Dovey; Alex Manton-Jones; James Sharples; Sam Peters; Jake Aungier; Haider Rubbani; Zac Bigley; Ryan Chan (Scorer)
Versus Highfield (Away) 30 0vers aside Saturday 28th April
A good performance at Highfield

We won the toss and decided to bat, but lost a wicket to the second ball of the match and runs were very hard to come by due to tight bowling and solid fielding. At the 15 over point we were only 2 wickets down but the score was only 42. However Dougie Moffat and JJ Dewes built a solid partnership and gradually accelerated the run rate. When they departed with less than 5 overs to go, the lower order attempted some big hits which did not come off but at least a score of over 100 was posted.
We took to the field knowing that we had to bowl better than we had against Caldicott and field better than we had done against Lord Wandsworth. In fact we were excellent in both of these disciplines, with the opening bowlers really testing the opposition batsmen and the fielders giving nothing away. This meant that the batsmen never looked comfortable, especially after 2 wickets were down before a run was scored. Eagle House kept up the pressure and at 25 for 8, it looked like an early finish but to their credit the Highfield lower order fought hard and more than doubled the score before the final wicket fell in the 26th over.
Scores:
Eagle House 118 for 9 (JJ Dewes 40; Dougie Moffat 35)
Highfield 72 ( Jonny Burgin 4 for 9; JJ Dewes 3 for 9; Dougie Moffat 2 for 23)
Result: Eagle House won by 46 runs.

Versus Lord Wandsworth (Home) Wednesday 25th April
We lost the toss and were asked to bat. Luke Boobbyer got the team off to a flying start with 3 boundaries off the first over and the score raced along. He compiled a very good 50 but then went out almost immediately. After a period of consolidation Dougie Moffat (batting for most of his innings with a runner) and Jonny Burgin kept up the impressive run rate, both of them also scoring over 50. Eagle House were able to declare after 30 overs with a score of over 200.
The Lord Wandsworth innings had a sensational start with Sam Peters being responsible for a direct hit on the stumps to get a wicket in the first over. A good partnership then developed and when it was broken more wickets fell, with Jake Aungier taking 2 in an over and with 12 overs left in the match Eagle House needed 4 wickets to win but the fielding team were frustrated by another partnership which took Lord Wandsworth to safety when time was called after we bowled 32 overs. Unfortunately the good start in the field with the early run out was not sustained and 6 dropped catches did not help in our attempt to secure a victory, but as in the first game we can take a lot of positives out of this game and build on them for the next set of matches.
Scores:
Eagle House 217 for 4 declared (Dougie Moffat 60; Jonny Burgin 53; Luke Boobbyer 51)
Lord Wandsworth 118 for 7 ( Jake Aungier 2 for 16)
Result: Match Drawn

Versus Caldicott (Away) Saturday 21st April
A tough start for a new team which contained only 2 players who had played in 2006. Caldicott won the toss and elected to bat on a wicket which was perfect for batting. Some wayward early bowling and a lightning fast outfield, meant that Caldicott raced along at over 8 runs an over. To their credit the Eagle House stuck to their task and the bowling and fielding inproved. We were able to pick up a wicket whenever a major partnership threatened. The pick of the bowlers were Jonny Burgin, Sam Dovey and JJ Dewes. Everyone worked hard in the field on a hot afternoon, in particular Zac Bigley while Alex Manton-Jones took a good catch and stumping.
In reply Eagle House lost a wicket in the first over but a good partnership developed between James Sharples and Dougie Moffat, the latter looking in good touch hitting 7 boundaries in his innings of 33. When these 2 were out wickets fell at regular intervals but JJ Dewes and Haider Rubbani played some good shots as Eagle House did not give up the fight.
Scores: Caldicott 186 for 7 (Sam Dovey 2 for 19; Jonny Burgin 2 for 31; Dougie Moffat 2 for 41)
Eagle House 126 (Dougie Moffat 33; JJ Dewes 17: Haider Rubbani 16)
Result: Eagle House lost by 59 runs
Team: Luke Boobbyer; James Sharples;Dougie Moffat; Jonny Burgin (Capt); Sam Dovey;JJ Dewes; Sam Peters; Jake Aungier; Alex Manton-Jones; Haider Rubbani; Zac Bigley; Kun Seo Chung (Scorer).
