Eagle House U8's

Under 8 High 5 Festival
Saturday 27th February 2010
Under 8A Squad
Team: Cordelia (Capt.)(1), Melanie(7), Anastasia(6), Sadie(3), Megan(2)
On a very wet Saturday the U8 girls were eager to get going, due to a combination of enthusiasm and cold. Their first match was against The Oratory, a repeat of the fixture earlier that week. Off to a flying start, they managed to win 9-0 with some beautiful passages of play that saw the ball being moved swiftly down the court and successfully scored. Only our GK felt a bit left out! A quick change for the next game and we were able to mark very tightly against The Abbey and secure a 4-2 win. The girls were full of confidence until they came up against some very tall players from Bishiopsgate in their next game. They fought very hard and managed to keep it to a 1-1 draw. In the final game Melanie shot some amazing goals and they came out with a triumphant 4-1 win over The Dolphin.
All the girls played exceptionally well and were all able to get on the score sheet. Their focus on footwork and passing is really paying off!
Under 8B Squad
Team: Anna (Capt), Emma, Hollie, Tabitha, Ella and Claudia
This was a perfect opportunity for this team to play several short games in succession and so gain valuable experience of match play. During our first game against Eton End 2 (0-3) we had several opportunities to shoot but just could not get the ball into the net. The girls worked hard against The Abbey (0-3)but their defenders really jumped for the ball so we could not get the ball into our circle. The next game we really worked hard to defend and grab the loose ball so we kept the score down to just a 1-0 defeat. this was a much better performance from the girls. We carried this momentum into our final game against the White House, again only losing 1-0 but the game was very evenly matched on the court.
All the girls improved their catching and passing during the morning but we do need to work hard on footwork. Well done everyone!
A big thank you to the entourage of mummies and daddies who gave excellent support from the sidelines but the Gold Medal must be awarded to Mr Morgan for downloading the rules before coming to the tournament! Superb!
Wednesday 24th February 2010
U8B v The Oratory
Won 3 - 2
Player of the match: Anna Morgan
Coach & match report- Meghan Whalley
Team: Anna Morgan, Emma Jennings, Ella Tyrell Smith, Tabitha Elmhirst, Hollie Hunt, Claudia Robinson
Although the weather was dull and a bit wet our determined girls set out for a brilliant win with some fantastic interceptions from Tabitha. We had a tendency to bunch at times, but the girls encouraged each other to move into the space on court. I was incredibly surprised how well we were watching our footwork. After our first goal from Claudia in the first half the girls were driven, which then lead to our next two goals in the second half. One scored by our Captain Anna and the second scored by Holly. Well done girls very impressive!
Wednesday 9th December 2009
U8A v Highfield U9
Drew 1-1
Player of the match: Anastasia Grillo
The girls have been practising very hard and were ready to take on a team a year older and a lot taller! They started well and were quite dominant in the first quarter, though unable to score any goals. In the second quarter Anastasia “swished” the ball straight through the net and we were 1-0 up. After half time Highfield came out fighting but our players rose to the challenge and kept marking very closely. We “stuck to our players like glue” and they were never able to get free. A late goal from Highfield in the third quarter meant the scores were level at 1-1. In the final quarter the Eagle House team had so much possession but struggled to get it into the circle as the GD and GK from Highfield were SO tall!
A really impressive match for the girls in which every player ran her heart out and marked their opponent closely. Next match we need to make sure we dodge to get in space, and then it will all start coming together!
U8A v Hawley Place
Won 7-2
Player of the Match: Sadie Parry
This was another positive result for this squad of girls but again our shooting let us down. From the centre pass the court play is good, the girls move to the space and are able to give strong shoulder passes. We get the ball into the circle, under the post but then cannot score the goal. During lesson time the girls are successful so I think we need to slow down and ensure we are balanced and in the correct position before taking the shot. There were numerous opportunities to gain the upper hand during the first quarter but at the end we were 2-0 down. After a rotation of position, the story was the opposite! Three passes and goal.....and goal........and goal!! Sadie was on fire, lovely passes from the centre Anastasia, strong drive from Anna and onto Sadie who scored beautifully. Anna picked up a rebound and scored again. This was a very strong quarter ending with a half-time lead of 6-2. During the next six minutes the ball went up and down the court with many interceptions from both sides, we tended to bunch together, not finding the space to receive the ball. Melanie and Georgia worked well in the circle but again found difficulty in scoring. Melanie did convert one of her opportunities making the score 7-2.
The final quarter saw the girls moving well and having real determination but we didn't add to our total.
Fantastic effort girls, lots of things to work but well done!! Keep shooting - lunch breaks, M & B................everyday.
Eagle House U8B V Marlston House
Won 7-1
Team: Ellis T (Captain), Anna M, Megan R, Ellie M, and Tabitha E.
Player of the match: Ellie M.
A fantastic team performance girls. The first half of the match was a tough one with most of the ball play in the centre third as all the girls stuck to the ball like glue, and weren’t occupying the space available on court. Fortunately we managed to score a goal in the second quarter which left the score 1-1. After a long team chat at half time, and a reminder about what we have been practicing in games lessons the girls went out on court eager to win. The third quarter was played absolutely amazingly. The girls marked their opposition like jelly and doughnuts, and managed to intercept almost every ball the opposition threw. Some quick and accurate passes down the court and into the circle meant our shooters had many opportunities to score which they did. 3 from Ellie M, and 1 from Anna M. At times I had to remind myself that these were the under 8’s playing. The final quarter was played just as well with another two goals scored this time 1 from Ellis T, and 1 from Megan R. This left the final score of 7-1 to us.
Overall the movement on the court was good with the majority of the team finding space to receive the ball, and marking up. Our passes were strong and accurate, and lot’s of intercepts gave us the upper hand as we had the ball most of the time. Every girl played a brilliant game, and I hope they keep it up.
Well done!
Under 8A Wednesday 11th November v Marlston House
Won 4-1
Player of the Match: Melanie Dickin
There were times during this game when I had to remind myself that the girls were only 7/8 years old. Several sequences of passes into the circle were swift and accurate, definitely as good as the Under 9's! Unfortunately our shooting let us down, the girls had numerous opportunities to score so we must be able to convert these into goals.
Overall movement on the court was good with the majority of the team finding space out wide to receive the ball. Marlston House displayed good footwork and a real desire to win the ball but we had the upper hand on stronger passes and space. Every girl had a good game and really showed their improvement. The goal scorers were Anastasia 2, Emma 1 and Sadie 1. Although the other team members did not score they demonstrated other talents with excellent interceptions and great court play. Melanie showed a really determined side to her play and was named man of the match by the opposition.
Well done to all the team!
Thursday 5th November V Hall Grove
Won 4-2
It was a very cold and dull afternoon for a netball match, but that didn't stop our very determined under 8 girls from playing brilliantly against Hall Grove. The team consisted of Anna M, Georgia F, Emma J, Anastasia G, Sadie P, Melanie D, and Cordelia B. The first quarter was tough with Hall Grove scoring early, and most of the ball play in the centre third not really going anywhere. After a quick team chat at quarter time about moving into space and snatching the ball, we scored three goals. There was some absolutely fantastic play down the court with lots of intercepting and quick passing. After half time and a quick change of bibs we started the third quarter with very high spirits. Unfortunately Hall Grove scored again which left us just 1 up (3-2). In the final quarter after another bib change we scored again with some more brilliant play with all the girls jumping and snatching the ball which left the ball mostly in our hands.
I hope the girls keep up this good work. They have certainly come very far since the start of the year.
Wednesday 14th October V St Andrew's Pangbourne
Blue Team Drew 3 - 3
Red Team 2-4
All the girls boarded the minibus with heaps of excitement, as this is their first match of the year. The drive to St Andrews was very enjoyable with the girls singing all the way there, and providing some great entertainment to our driver Gary.
The Blue team were first to play. The team consisted of Cordelia B, Melanie D, Georgia F, Hollie H, and Megan R. The first two quarters were played brilliantly by EH. A string of good passes were played down the court and into the circle which gave our girls plenty of opportunities to shoot and score. One in particular by Melanie which was a bit of a risk, but definitely played off. The 3rd and 4th quarters were very tough as St Andrew's equaled our score. We seemed to have lost some focus during the third quarter by not thinking before we threw the ball. After another swapping of positions and a quick team talk EH picked up the defence and prevented St Andrew's from scoring again. Unfortunately we didn't so we settled for a draw of three all.
The Red team were next to play with the team consisting of Sadie P, Emma J, Anastasia G, Anna M, Tabitha E, and Ella T-S. The first two quarters were very tough for EH with St Andrew's scoring three points. The girls were a bit like bee's to a honey pot, and weren't using the space on court. The third and fourth quarters were played really well after a half time pep talk. The girls began to spread out on court, and really started to mark and dodge their opposition to get the ball. We managed to score two points these two quarters, but were unfortunately able to match St Andrew's score.
I'm very proud of all the U8 girls for their performances on the day. Keep it up.
