Won 17 - 11

Team: Kitty Allum, Sophie Corner, Arabella Nunn, Caitlyn Earwaker, Alice Jennings, Megan Wilkins , Lucy Whitehead

Girl of the Game - Caitlyn Earwaker

Coaches Girl of the Game - without a doubt - Sophie Corner!

This was one of those games that fill you with terror, as we travelled a long distance to play a team who we thought were going to be full strength, especially as Eagle House only had 3 of its original 1st team players playing, and several players out of position..... but I am so pleased to say I was proved wrong.

The girls played their socks off and had control of the game the whole way through. A special mention for Sophie who normally plays GA but was playing out of position at WD, demonstarted what a very versatile player should look like.  Simply fantastic defensive work Sophie - well done, I honestly think you need to consider where you play on court.

Great shooting from Kitty and Caitlyn and our circle defence also worked their magic by snatching many rebounds, and bringing the abll up the court.

A wonderful game to watch and umpire girls - well done!

Tuesday 1st March

St Marys, Ascot

Won 17 - 13

Team: Georgina, Eloise, Coco, Arabella, Menna, Sophie, Kitty, Megan, Katy

Player of the Match: Sophie Corner

A great game to start the week in preparation for IAPS on Friday.  Obviously every one is concerned as Arabella went over on her ankle, but I am sure she will be fighting fit for Friday.  You kept in control of this game even with the disruption and the swapping round of players so well done to each of you.

Saturday 5th February v Cranleigh A

Lost 11-17

Team: Georgina, Eloise, Coco, Arabella, Menna, Sophie and Caitlyn

Player of the Match: Eloise Rimmer

Physically and mentally, this game was tough. On arrival we discovered that the girls we were due to play were Cranleigh U12A team and even though they were younger, there was not a moment when this age difference showed. From the start the game was hard fought, Cranleigh created space and worked the ball fluidly down the court with great dodging and movement onto the ball. They made the most of every opportunity and coverted most of their shots at goal. We played well and matched their quick movements and took an early lead but then allowed our passes to be intercepted by inaccurate passing or timing the drive. Several attempts at goal were missed which left us slightly behind at the end of the first quarter.

Georgina had her work cut out marking an extremely athletic GA by keeping her from charging into the circle and dominating the play but when she had a shot at goal she rarely missed. Cranleigh picked up the pace during this and the next quarter, they jumped upon our mistakes and were quick to intercept the ball taking it down the court to extend their lead. Unfortunately we didn't score one goal during the third quarter.

The 4th quarter was the best display of netball from both sides. Tight and extremely close marking dominated, especially in our defending circle but EH were prepared for this, Eloise and Georgina jumped higher, stuck their ground and forced inaccurate passes from the opposition. Coco, Arabella and Menna in the centre third had their timing spot on, created space for each other and stronger passes were more evident. Sophie and Caitlyn's change of position seemed to help the movement in this attacking third and more attempts at goal were converted. The ball moved quickly up and down the court, the pace was fast and furious but there were some wonderful interceptions from both sides. EH had now summed up their opposition and could match them in all their skill. This quarter ended up being a draw, four goals each - a fitting end to this entertaining game.

Well done girls for sticking in there, tough game but a great experience. Thank you Jenny for taking the photos.

1st v The Marist

Lost 10 – 14 (2-3)(5-8)(8-10)(10-14)

This was a tough game to kick off the term. Marist were fast, energetic and a very determined side. This was not a game where anyone could afford to slack off for one second.

As seems to be usual, we were slow to get going; the girls were quite reticent as the court surface was slippery. All it took was a couple of inaccurate passes resulting in a turnover by the opposition and we were two down straight away. But the team rallied and took on the challenge. Short passes did not help our cause as they were too easily intercepted but we finished off the first quarter 3-2.

Much stronger and longer passes helped us to play a strong 2nd quarter. The ball travelled quickly up and down the court, our movement onto the ball was more dynamic and use of the whole court was much improved. As the game got faster some of our individual skills broke down allowing the Marist to take advantage and take on a bigger lead.

The 3rd quarter was our best performance. The girls really worked as a team timing their drive into space and onto the ball and then giving an accurate pass. When in defence they stuck very close to their opposition forcing errors and so mad e several great interceptions consequently winning the quarter 3-2.

The Marist never gave up putting on the pressure and converted nearly every opportunity at goal during the final quarter, unfortunately we could not match that. The Marist just had that extra desire and skill combined with some extremely athletic girls that produced a great standard of netball.

There were some moments of great play by our team, the foundations are there. The defence trio of Eloise, Georgina and Coco really improved their goaline pass so getting the ball away from the danger zone swiftly. Georgina had a superb but exhausting game against their star player whilst Arabella worked hard as the link, making herself available when needed and taking the ball up to the attack. Menna was always quick to drive onto the ball and then produced wonderfully strong pasess to our shooters. Sophie and Kitty had a good game in the circle making some short accurate passes to get the ball closer to the goal. Their movement improved over the game so I can ask for nothing more.

Well done girls, not a win but a really great game where you played well and showed your strengths. Many things to focus upon but a great start to the term. Thank you to our two cheerleaders on the sideline for their support.

A great day of netball girls, well done!  Considering you haven't played must competitive netball yet this term you all played really well as a unit.  A bit of work needs to be done on our rotation and movement in the circle, as we have a lot of very predictable play which is easily read by our opposition.  So we will try and work on this in training next term.  Superb defence from Georgina and Katy, we just need to watch our passing when we make a turn around.

We can take a lot of positives from this tournament girls, and build you into a very strong team for next term.  As and when you can - Shooters you need to practice your shooting, 20, 40, 100 a day - it's the only way you are going to improve. Everyone else, strengthen your shoulder pass - fire balls to each other or against the ball, anything to build up your power and direction.

Thanks to all our supporters on the side-line!

Tuesday 12th October v St. Mary’s

Lost 23-13

Player of the Match: Sophie Corner

Team: Georgina, Arabella, Kitty, Sophie, Eloise, Coco and Menna

This was always going to be a tough game. St. Mary’s have far far larger numbers than EH but it is good for the girls to pit themselves against stronger teams. Despite that fact we did manage to keep the scores level for the first quarter. Then St. Mary’s picked up the pace and this is where we started to fall apart. Lack of match play meant that the team played more as individuals and so created a messy and muddled centre third with several girls going for the same ball. Even after a team talk, EH panicked as St. Mary’s added to their score and due to weak and inaccurate passing our ball was easily intercepted. We seemed to always be a second behind our opposition when defending instead of positioning sideways on. A final determined team talk brought out a more focused side who then began to play as the team of old. They began to have faith in each other, moving  off the ball and allowing players to drive into the space. The improvement came too late for this game but hopefully the girls came off the court realising that they can raise their game with a more dogged and single-minded approach.

This was a fast and furious game with St. Mary’s moving the ball very quickly and accurately down the court. They were the better team on the day and played entertaining netball. Thank you to parental support on the sidelines

Wednesday 13th October  v  Hall Grove

Won 15 – 12

Player of the Match: Menna  Braithwaite

For the first half this was a most frustrating game to watch with the ball being given away easily. The lack of teamwork and match practise was obvious with far too much crowding in the centre third, allowing frequent turnover of the ball.  Hall Grove were quick onto the loose ball and carried the ball with short fast passes down the court. EH found this style of play very hard to mark and intercept although we always seemed to be running behind the attacker and not side-on ready to intercept the oncoming pass.

Hall Grove took advantage of our inaccurate passes, intercepting them with their gutsy play and made short work of getting them back into their circle and their extremely tall shooter. Quarter time left us down by a couple of goals but by half time we had managed to pull level. Gradually during the second half, the girls started to play the game, the attack stayed back to allow the defence to move the ball into the attacking area and then came forward onto the ball. The final quarter saw a great improvement in attitude and therefore in their performance. We witnessed some great strong passes down the court, each player giving their team mate space in which to drive onto the ball. Some lovely goals from both shooters finished this game off well. This was a good second game despite starting slowly but we must try to remember to begin the game by playing at this standard from the first whistle, with a real desire to win and a hunger for the ball.
