Under 9 A’s Hockey

Eagle House v Marlston House home

Final score: 0-2 Lost

Team: Sadie Parry (Captain), Megan Ross, Melanie Dickin, Georgia Frost, Cordelia Bambury, Anastasia Grillo, Anna Morgan (Goalkeeper).

Marlston House Player of the Match: Anna Morgan.

It would be fair to say that this was not the best game that we have played all season. Perhaps Half Term had dulled the keen alertness from before, as from the start, Marlston House were more cohesive as a team and worked together better, making use of our scrappy mistakes. However, as the game unfolded, we came together better and there was some great passing and positioning from the midfield and use of the wings which resulted in a goal from Melanie. Special mention must go to Megan Ross who had an outstanding game in defence – tenaciously tackling and cleverly clearing out to the wings. Anna Morgan also had a fantastic game as goalie and as so often overlooked, I can’t think of a more deserved recipient for Player of the Match.

This was a good learning opportunity for you girls – whilst you played well, you saw the merit that the opposition showed in taking free hits quickly and spreading out in order to work better as a team. Hopefully this knowledge will be embedded and be the basis for our next match!

Final score: 0-2 Lost

Goal scored: Melanie Dickin.

Under 9 B’s Hockey

Eagle House v Marlston House home

Final score: 0-0 Draw

Team: Emily Barber (Captain), Sophia Orr, Ella Tyrrell Smith, Phoebe Tennant, Holly Hunt, Isabella Orr, Emma Jennings, Anna Morgan (Goalkeeper)

Marlston House Player of the Match: Ella Tyrrell Smith

Having supported their A team pals five minutes prior to playing, it seemed to have worked as a catalyst as to what to and what not to do, such was the enthusiasm and focus within the B team from the outset. You really did try your very best and you worked really well together as a team and there were some fantastic examples of moving onto the ball and calling between players, showing us how you are learning to anticipate passes and work your best collectively. There was some great defending going on and special mention must go to Emily Barber, a new girl to the school, who tackled relentlessly and cleared the ball to the sidelines expertly. Indeed, Emma, Emily and Anna worked fantastically well together in defence. We persevered and worked together getting the ball progressively down the pitch, but whilst there were moments of great hope, we just couldn’t convert these opportunities into goals.

It really was a fairly matched game girls and it could have gone either way, hence the result as a draw. I was very pleased with you and your focus, your team mentality and your tenacious spirit so whilst the result is seemingly disappointing, your coach was far from it! Well done girls – keep up the good work and we’ll work on that attempts and goal ratio! J

Final score: 0-0 Draw

Under 9 A’s Hockey

Eagle House v Yateley Manor home

Final score: 3-0 Win

Team: Anna Morgan (Captain), Emma Jennings, Megan Ross, Melanie Dickin, Sadie Parry, Georgia Frost, Cordelia Bambury.

Yateley Manor Player of the Match: Melanie Dickin.

It is fair to say that we played some of our best hockey yet as a team in today’s match against Yateley Manor. The penny has dropped and the girls are finally acknowledging that it is better to create space between themselves and their teammate who is in possession of the ball in order to work at their best. The midfielders worked together particularly well today, making good use of their wings and allowing themselves to position themselves in the best goal scoring positions having made that pass as a result. Defence was strong too, so any balls that did make it passed the midfield was staunchly fought off by Georgia and Megan at the back. Particular mention must go to Anna Morgan who had an outstanding performance as goalie and saved every attempt on goal! Also, a big acknowledgement must go to Emma Jennings who stepped up to the plate and played a great game of hockey as right wing after Anastasia sadly had to go to hospital with an injured finger.

The only constructive feedback I can give further to acknowledging the great things that you are doing already would be to make sure that you work that bit harder to get your feet round in order to be in their strongest position to tackle or defend. You are far more likely to achieve what you want if you have your stick the right way around! J

Well done girls. A great result and a very happy coach J

Final score: 3-0 win.

Goals scored: Sadie, Melanie and Cordelia respectively.

Under 9 B’s Hockey

Eagle House v Yateley Manor home

Final score: 2-1 Loss

Team: Emma Jennings(Captain), Sophia Orr, Ella Tyrrell Smith, Phoebe Tennant, Holly Hunt, Isabella Orr, Anna Morgan.

Yateley Manor Player of the Match: Isabella Orr

It was an evenly matched game of hockey played here at home today between Eagle House and Yateley Manor and the result could have gone either way, such was the energy and enthusiasm of the players on both sides. At half time we were 1-0 up after a fantastic partnership and some great passing between Isabella and Sophia, which resulted in a great goal from Izzy. All of the girls worked really hard to try and facilitate space and therefore the opportunity to work well as a team but at the end of the day, it was a simple case of being in the right place at the right time and in the second half we conceded 2 goals in a short space of time and couldn’t quite claw it back.

Special mention must go to Anna Morgan who played as goalie in both matches and who’s performances in both were particularly impressive. Emma Jennings, captain, also played in both by default after an injury shortly before the A team match saw her catapulted into the position of right wing where she did herself proud.

Constructive feedback girls would be to make sure that you are in your strongest position for what you want to achieve before you do it – make that extra effort to get your feet around and you will reap the rewards. Also, if you look up and spread out that little bit more, you will further improve your performance as a team.

Well done though girls – the score is not a true reflection on how well you played as a team or the effort that was aplenty.

Final score: 2-1 Loss

Goal scored by Isabella Orr.

Under 9B’s Hockey

Eagle House v Edgeborough away

Final score: 2-3 Lost

Team: Megan Ross (Captain), Emma Jennings, Phoebe Tennant, Isabella Orr, Sophia Orr, Georgia Frost, Anna Morgan.

It was a bitterly cold January afternoon, but nothing could diminish the spirit and enthusiasm of our Under 9B team as they took on Edgeborough’s Under 9A’s at hockey in an away match. It was a pretty equally matched game between the two sides in the end and our girls tried really hard to put in place some recently learnt skills and take on board the coaching advice given. The first goal scored by Sofia Orr and the second which shortly followed by her sister, Isabella, showed how well the girls were working together and heeding the advice to spread out and pass to one another; as well as putting yourself in front of the goal as much as possible if you are in attack! The game really could have gone either way which is a huge accolade to the girl’s efforts and a special mention should go to Georgia Frost, Emma Jennings and Anna Morgan who worked really hard in defence.

All we need to do now girls is to gain confidence in our ability to work as a team – to spread out and look for one another in order to work collectively towards the goal. It will happen!

Final score: 3-2 lost.

Cranleigh Hockey Festival

Team: Melanie Dickin, Sadie Parry, Georgia Frost, Anna Morgan, Cordelia Bambury, Anastasia Grillo, Megan Ross, Phoebe Tennant

Won 2 - 0 - Downsend  (Cordelia & Melanie)

Lost 2 - 1 Cranleigh A (Anastasia)

Won 3 -1 PGS (Cordelia, Anastasia, Melanie)

What a fab morning of hockey girls - well done!  I have never seen you play so well, all that driving down the middle of the pitch, passing out to the wings and then pushing the hard ball into the D - it was just wonderful to watch.  A thoroughly well deserved 2nd place in our section, having just missed out on the 1st place by Cranleigh's last goal in the dying seconds of the game.  As I said to all today, my only little moan is you have all got to keep working, all of you are responsible for getting back and helping out your defence when the opposition is on the attack.

Thank you to all the mums and dads who came to watch and support, it was just a shame you all left 5 minutes too early to see Mrs Creighton and Miss Brewster get the mini bus stuck in the mud!  We had to wait for the tractor to pull us out..... oh well we certainly left our mark at Cranleigh (in the form of 2 great big pot holes on their nice grassy bank).

Keep up the great play girls it is wonderful to see you playing so well.

Eagle House U9A's v Lambrook

Hockey Match – Away

Final Score: Lost  2 - 1

Team: Cordelia Bambury - Captain, Anastasia Grillo, Emma Jennings, Melanie Dickin, Megan Ross, Georgia Frost, Sadie Parry, Goalie: Anna Morgan.

Lambrook’s Girl of the Match – Cordelia Bambury

Yesterday’s match against Lambrook Haileybury was a defeat in goals scored, but a huge triumph for our under 9 girls in the progress stakes. Having only played a few games this season, the opportunity to put into place the skills that they have been working on and just as importantly, the chance to really work together as a team, has been so limited due to the recent snow that one cannot blame their steep learning curve and lack of cohesion on previous occasions. However, there was none of that yesterday when for the first time this season, they truly worked together as a team – stepping away from play largely in order to create space between themselves and their teammates to enable strategic passing and the forwards finally “clicked” by pushing up when the wings held the ball to put themselves into a prime position to score. When attacking we were strong, but I did feel that we could have helped ourselves further by working back more quickly when play went to the opposition and braving tackles more readily. Special mention should go to Melanie Dickin “The Fearless”, as I have now named her, however, who time and time again went into tackles showing her strength and determination and then going on to score our only goal. In defense, Georgia Frost had a particularly good game and has really fathomed the gist of how to tackle and clear the ball and Anna Morgan had a fantastic first game in her new kit, actively saving many of their opposition’s attempts on goal and working well with her defense team.

For me the final score was academic. The improvement in your playing together as a team and respect and cohesion amongst team players was a profound win and the foundations of what will secure you as a really great team. All we need to concentrate on now is the ‘ebb and flow’ of the game and making sure you are where you are supposed to be; defending who you should be and tackle, tackle, tackle is the motto of the game!

Well done girls – you really did yourselves proud and I am very excited for the Lent term and progressing things on from here. Here’s wishing you a very Happy Christmas and a healthy and successful 2011.

Eagle House U9A's v The Oratory

Hockey Match – Away

Score: Lost  8 - 0

1st quarter - 0 - 2 / 2nd quarter 0 - 4 / 3rd quarter 0 - 8 / 4th quarter 0 – 8

Team: Sadie Parry - Captain, Anastasia Grillo, Cordelia Bambury, Anna Morgan, Melanie Dickin, Megan Ross, Georgia Frost, Phoebe Tennant. The Oratory’s Player of the Day – Anastasia Grillo

This Wednesday’s match against The Oratory was a learning curve for our under 9A hockey team. It showed brilliantly however, the Eagle House spirit of which we are so proud. On arrival, we learnt that we were to play on grass which the girls are not used to and that they had a kitted out keeper; which we didn’t! Most of the teams that we play against play without a keeper, but no matter – the girls absorbed the knowledge immediately and graciously and got stuck in with the advice of hitting the ball harder than on astro and that it would be slower and so they would have to move towards the ball more.

Despite The Oratory being a better team at the end of the day, our girls showed integrity and commitment to trying their absolute best and their efforts towards trying to score and getting braver at tackling were notable. A particular mention should go to Anna Morgan, Megan Ross and Georgia Frost who worked hard and cohesively in defense and Anastasia Grillo for being one step ahead of the game and positioning herself so well. The forwards and wings are getting better at anticipating passes and learning to spread out more, but I do feel that with some specific pointers on using the wings, going in for a tackle and positioning oneself best to score, that these girls could be a really solid hockey team.

I’d like to take this opportunity to say how polite and courteous our girls were; especially in light of a rather demoralizing match. Well done girls and here’s to a better result next time!

The final score was 8-0 to The Oratory.

Friday 5th November v Holme Grange

Team: Melanie Dickin, Anastasia Grillo, Anna Morgan, Megan Ross, Cordelia Bambury, Georgia Frost, Emma Jennings and Pheobe Tennant

Player of the Match: Melanie Dickin, Anna Morgan

This was a tough game for their first match of the season albeit a coaching game. Holme Grange have had hockey as their major sport this term and already have several games under their belt. This was evident in their sharp, quick passing and their support for one another. They used our weak side which is something we can learn from - do not take the ball straight on their strong side. Many occasions we were bees around a honey pot, so there was nowhere to pass and no-one to pass to. When we did find space we had a couple of good runs, especially from Melanie and Anastasia up the wing.  The centre of the pitch was often muddled so we must always try to get the ball out to the space and look for the striker up the in the D.

The team must not be disheartened from this defeat. There were many promising plays from our side and with further drive, determination and commitment I know it will all come together
