Thursday 8 March – Matches vs Feltonfleet
Results:
Eagle House ‘C’ 3 - 1 Feltonfleet
Eagle House ‘D’ 0 - 3 Feltonfleet
Both of the sides acquitted themselves well and some lovely hockey was played by all the boys. The ‘D’ side came up against a very strong Feltonfleet team and even though they defended well, they could not stop the opposition scoring three very well taken goals. The effort of the boys can’t be faulted and with a little more composure on the ball they could have given Feltonfleet a run for their money.
The ‘C’ side played some outstanding hockey and were deserved winners. They spread the ball wide beautifully and this created space in the middle for the players running into the ‘D’. Well don’t to Jack Rigg and Federico Anderson for scoring the goals and to all the boys for creating lots of chances and defending well.
Next week is our last match of the season against St Georges Weybridge and it would be excellent to finish on a high. Keep working hard boys!
Thursday 2nd February - Matches vs. Cranleigh
Results:
Eagle House 'C' 0 - 2 Cranleigh
Eagle House “D” 1 - 2 Cranleigh
This was a day that was probably better suited to ice hockey than to field hockey. It was bitterly cold and I thought all the boys battled bravely through the afternoon.
I was unfortunately unable to watch the “D” side play as I was called upon to referee the other game. I believe though from speaking to all the boys and the referee that it was an enjoyable and tight encounter. The score was 1-0 to Eagle House at half time with congratulations going to Ben Wayman for his goal. Cranleigh managed to score 2 in the second half and even though the Eagle House boys had a couple of opportunities, they just couldn’t manage to grab an equalizing goal.
The “C” game started with a few chances at both ends and we looked set for a very tight game. The aforementioned cold came into play a bit as Ollie Vine, our right winger, had to be sent on a few laps of the field as he couldn’t feel his hands. This scuppered the game plan we had been working on, which was to get the ball down the right to Ollie who would then cross the ball into the D. There were a few confused looks as boys would get ready to pass only to see Ollie jogging away at the other end of the pitch. The Cranleigh team seemed less affected and were playing some lovely hockey, with one of their sweeping moves leading to their first goal.
We managed to find a few pairs of gloves at half time (thank you to some of the parents who gave up theirs) and normality was restored. Eagle House had a few forays into the Cranleigh half but unfortunately we just couldn’t seem to come up with the all important goal. To make matters worse, Cranleigh scored with just seconds left and there was not really any time left to get back into it.
Well done to all the boys, we are starting to look more composed on the ball and are trying to play thinking hockey instead of just trying to hit the ball as hard as we can.
Thursday 26th January - Matches vs. St. Andrew's, Woking
Results
Eagle House 'C' 0 - 0 St. Andrew's
Eagle House 'D' 0 - 1 St. Andrew's
It was a very good afternoons hockey with both teams applying themselves well. It was the first game of hockey that most of the boys had ever played and the standard was very high.
The D side kicked off the afternoon and a very even game ensued. We gave away a goal in the first half but worked very hard to get back into the match. Unfortunately this was not to be and we went down 1-0. Credit must go to all the boys who worked their socks off on the field and showed great determination.
The C game was end to end stuff, with both teams having numerous chances to snatch it. It was quite hard to believe that this game ended 0-0 because both sides will feel that they had done enough to win it. In the end I think a draw was a fair result, as neither side really deserved to lose. The standard of hockey was high and this team will go from strength to strength as the season continues.
Both teams played well but I did feel that both teams tended to try and play the ball straight down the middle of the pitch, instead of looking for width. This is due partly to players needing to stay in their allocated positions as well as trying to control the ball before passing it to someone. This composure will come with practice and we will look hard at spreading the ball wide in training this week.
