U/9A hockey v Hoe Bridge. Wednesday 3 Ferbruary Team: J. Erridge T. Robinson J. Carling J. Rees C. Perry H. Howard After managing to fit in a few training sessions after the snow had disrupted our plans in the first week or two, we were finally prepared and ready for our first match. We set off for Hoe Bridge feeling quietly confident and with the resolve to win our first game of the hockey season. We had James Erridge in as a kicking back/goalkeeper, with Charlie Perry playing just in front of him in the heart of defence. Toby Robinson, Jack Carling and Jack Rees made up the midfield trio, leaving Harry Howard as our marauding forward. The game started off at a frantic pace, with Hoe Bridge doing most of the attacking. Charlie was a very busy man at the back, and Toby was doing an excellent job getting back to help him. Hoe Bridge were playing some excellent hockey, and they deservedly went 2-0 up very early. Watching from the sidelines it just seemed that we hadn’t really arrived and the first two goals really set us back. We had an encouraging move or two but the half really belonged to the opposition, who went into the break 5-0 up. After some words of encouragement at half-time, the boys came out for the second half with renewed vigour and energy. We competed for everything and were first to the ball most of the time. Harry Howard was hassling the opposition defence and a mistake by one of their boys led to Harry deservedly scoring our first (and only) goal. The midfield was starting to support each other, and we created quite a few good chances that we unfortunately failed to convert. The big thing was that on too many occasions one of our boys would try to take on the opposition on his own, when moving the ball wide or passing the ball to a team mate in space would have been the more sensible option. Unfortunately Hoe Bridge finished the stronger and added three more goals to their tally. It turned out to be quite a large defeat, but there were many positives to take from the second half. F-T 1-8
