Wednesday 15th September - Match 1 vs. Sunningdale
Result: Eagle House 3 - 1 Sunningdale (Scorers: Dominic Atherton, Lewis Riddell and Jonathan Foster)
Team: Brendon Parvess, Harry Rees, Adam Robinson, Harry Frost, Mark Erridge, Theo Talbot, Dominic Atherton, Lewis Riddell, Mohammed Rubbani, Aman Ale, Austin Larson, Jonathan Foster
The 2nd XI began their season in fine style with a hard fought win over a physically strong Sunningdale outfit.
The early exchanges were very evenly contested. Mohammed nearly broke the deadlock midway through the first half with a thunderous drive that crashed against the underside of the cross bar. Unlike Frank Lampard's effort, television replays confirmed that it had not crossed the line! Slowly but surely the Eagles began to dominate. Adam, Harry R, Mark and Harry F worked tireless to negate the strong and physical Sunningdale forward line. Dominic, who had an outstanding game, gave the Eagles a deserved lead, latching on to a through ball from Theo and finishing with aplomb. However, this lead lasted for just over a minute as a hopeful free kick sailed over our back 4 and was expertly finished by the Sunningdale winger. 1-1 at half time and all to play for.
The second half was dominated by Eagle House. Lewis restored our lead with a terrific header from a corner delivered by Theo - his second assist of the match. Jonno then put the game beyond doubt straight from the kick-off. Again Theo was instrumental, providing the final ball for Jonno to expertly slot the ball passed the advancing keeper.
Jonno, Austin and Aman provided a nice mix of pace, power, tenacity and skill up front. Brendon distributed the ball effectively and was a calming presence on the team. Special mention for Theo and Dominic who were both extremely influential on their debuts for the school.
A satisfying result and a pleasing all round performance. Well done boys!
Man of the Match - Dominic Atherton
Saturday 18th September - Match 2 vs. Cranleigh Prep
Result: Cranleigh Prep 3 - 0 Eagle House
Team: Brendon Parvess, Harry Rees, Adam Robinson, Harry Frost, Mark Erridge, Edward Joslin, Dominic Atherton, Lewis Riddell, Mohammed Rubbani, Austin Larson, Jonathan Foster, Michael Gimson
When your goalkeeper is named as Man of the Match it tells a story in itself! Saturday always promised to be a stern test and that certainly proved to be the case.
We started brightly and fashioned a brace of half chances early on, but unfortunately we were unable to take them. As the half went on Cranleigh slowy began to dominate. The pace and power of their centre forward was a constant threat to our back four, however Adam, Mark, Harry R and Michael worked tirelessly to try and negate the threat. Cranleigh broke the dealock 5 minutes before half time with a bullet header from a corner and it was a lead they probably deserved.
The boys showed great deal of determination and tenacity to compete in the second half. Cranleigh launched attack after attack but were thwarted time and again by Brendon who was absolutely outstanding in goal. They were a constant threat from set pieces and scored 2 more goals midway through the second half to seal the game.
A spirited performance from the boys, but we were beaten by a better side on the day. Much to be positive about but also lots to work on before Wednesday.
Man of the Match - Brendon Parvess
Wednesday 22nd September - Match 3 vs. Yateley Manor
Result: Eagle House 1 - 4 Yateley Manor (Scorers: Dominic Atherton)
Team: Brendon Parvess, Harry Rees, Adam Robinson, Harry Frost, Mark Erridge, Theo Talbot, Dominic Atherton, Lewis Riddell, Mohammed Rubbani, Aman Ale, Austin Larson, Jonathan Foster, Michael Gimson
The final score line in this game did not necesserily reflect what was a very evenly matched contest.
After falling behind to a rather speculative long range effort from a misplaced clearance, the Eagles responded immediately and equalised through a well taken penalty by Dominic. The remainder of the half was closely fought with both sides squandering good chances.
The second half continued in a similar vein. Despite a good degree of endeavour, particularly in midfield, we were unable to create any clear cut chances. Yateley Manor, on the other hand, did fashion a couple of good opportunities and to their credit they took them.
Lessons can certainly be learned from this performance. I am sure the boys will take these on board and respond with a positive display against Hall Grove next week.
Man of the Match - Harry Rees
Wednesday 29th September - Match 4 vs. Hall Grove
Result: Hall Grove 1 - 2 Eagle House (Scorers: Aman Ale 2)
Team: Brendon Parvess, Harry Rees, Adam Robinson, Harry Frost, Mark Erridge, Theo Talbot, Dominic Atherton, Mohammed Rubbani, Aman Ale, Austin Larson, Jonathan Foster, Michael Gimson
What a diference a week makes! After back to back defeats the boys responded in fine style and certainly let their "football do the talking". The Eagles displayed that highly sort after sporting commodity "bouncebackability" and put in a fantastic all round team performance.
Eagle House dominated from start to finish. Aman was outstanding throughout, his pace and power was a constant threat to the Hall Grove defenders. He scored 2 good goals and was unlucky not to notch more with 2 freekicks that came tantalisingly close. Jonno and Mohammed were energetic and enthusiastic up front. Theo, Harry R and Dominic were industrious and combative in midfield. Michael, Adam, Harry F and Mark were calm and resolute in defence. Brendon was solid and dependable as ever in goal. All deserve credit.
A late Hall Grove goal did cause hearts to flutter somewhat and lead to the occasional nervous moment. But this was a thoroughly deserved victory. A real team effort.
There is much still to work on, but the boys should be pleased with the way they performed and of the attitude they showed. Well done!
Man of the Match - Aman Ale
Wednesday 6th October - Match 5 vs. Pangbourne College
Result: Eagle House 7 - 0 Pangbourne College (Scorers: James Fowlie 2, Mohammed Rubanni 2, Ali Tilmouth, Theo Talbot, OG)
Team: Brendon Parvess, Adam Robinson, Harry Frost, Mark Erridge, Theo Talbot, Dominic Atherton, Mohammed Rubbani, Aman Ale, Austin Larson, Jonathan Foster, James Fowlie, Ali Tilmouth
The Eagles made it back to back wins with another pleasing all round team performance.
We began the game strongly with Mark and Theo combining very effectively down the right hand side to create havoc in the Pangbourne defence. Mohammed opened the scoring midway through the first half with a well taken finish and we soon doubled our lead as an in swinging corner from Ali was deflected home courtesy of an unfortunate Pangbourne defender.
To their credit Pangbourne defended resolutely for the remainder of the half and despite having the lions share of possesion the Eagles were unable to extend their lead.
In the second period it was largely one way traffic. Ali was a constant threat down the left and was rewarded for his efforts with a fine goal. James added a strong physical presence to the team and also showed a keen eye for goal, scoring twice, one of which was a great strike from 20 yards. Dominic was hard working as ever in the centre of midfield and was at the heart of much of our best play. Mohammed and Jonno provided pace and intelligent movement up front, which kept the Pangbourne defence on its toes.
Keeping a clean sheet is always pleasing and the back four of Adam, Harry, Mark and Austin deserve great credit for both the way they have started to work together as unit and also their much improved distribution. Brendon remains calming and assured presence in goal.
The boys have made great strides in the past 2 weeks. They must continue to build on this momentum. Papplewick on Saturday promises to be a tough examination of how far we have come.
Man of the Match - Mohammed Rubbani
Saturday 9th October - Match 6 vs. Papplewick
Result: Papplewick 2 - 0 Eagle House
Team: Brendon Parvess, Adam Robinson, Harry Frost, Mark Erridge, Theo Talbot, Dominic Atherton, Mohammed Rubbani, Aman Ale, Robert Phillips, Jonathan Foster, James Fowlie, Ali Tilmouth
The 2nd XI played some of there best Football of the season on Saturday and can count themselves unfortunate to have lost 2-0.
This was a very evenly contested game. The difference between to the two teams was undoubtedly Papplewick's clinical finishing. Despite much of our good play we were unable to create any clear cut chances. Dominic and James worked tirelessly as ever in the centre of midfield. Ali and Theo were always a threat on the flanks and Mohammed and Jonno provided their usual energy and enthusiasm up front. But despite all our endeavour we were unable to unlock a strong Paplewick defence. They did however manage to fashion an opportunity on the stroke of half time and despite a good initial save from Brendon, he was unable to keep out the rebound and we went into the break a goal down.
The second half continued in a similar vein to the first. Thrust followed by counter thrust. We did manage to create more chances but lacked that all important "killer instinct" when it mattered. Harry and Adam have become solid and dependable centre back pairing and both played very well. Special mention to Robert Phillips who played extremely well on debut. His "Rory Delap-like" long throw caused havoc in the Papplewick defence at times. Mark Erridge was absolutely outstanding throughout the game. His calm distiburtion and cover defence really caught the eye.
A late penalty miss by us and a late penalty scored by Papplewick gave the result a gloss that perhaps flattered our opponents, but there were yet again many positives that can be taken out of the performance. Well done boys!
Man of the Match - Mark Erridge
