U/9A Cricket match vs Ludgrove. Saturday 10 May 2008
On a beautiful sunny afternoon the U/9A side played their first hard ball cricket match. We won the toss and captain Brendon Parvess elected to bowl first.
We started very well with Brendon starting with a wicket maiden over to leave the Ludgrove boys reeling. However they recovered well and started to score runs with a relative amount of freedom. It was the first game for many of our boys and the nerves started to show, with us giving away needless runs by bowling wides and no-balls. Our fielding was outstanding, barring a few lapses in concentration, with boys flinging themselves all over the field, to try and save the runs. Ludgrove batted very well, losing relatively few wickets, with the result that they ended on a very healthy 332. (It must be remembered that in the U/9’s we start on 200 as it is minus 5 for every wicket lost.)
A few mentions must be made for superb bowling, Brendon Parvess was the star of the show, taking two wickets for no runs in his two overs. Ben Barnard also bowled superbly and was unlucky to only take 1 wicket with his out-swinging deliveries. Hassan Rubbani bowled with real pace and menace and Mathew Meikle and Rob Phillips were the find of the day for me with their accurate bowling. Alvaro Rivas De Anta must also be mentioned for taking a wicket with his first ball in his first ever cricket match.
The boys went into bat knowing that to reach the Ludgrove total, concentration and a little bit of daring would be required. The first pair, Max Hammond and Lucas Bamber started off brightly, putting on thirteen runs in the first two overs with some well hit boundaries and some clever running, but unfortunately lost their way a bit, losing a couple of wickets and they ended their four overs on 12. Next in were Brendon Parvess and Hassan Rubbani, and this was an entertaining partnership to say the least. The Ludgrove bowlers were dispatched to all corners of the ground, as both Has and Brendon found the middle of the bat with regularity. They added 39 runs to the total in their four overs, leaving us in a healthy position at 51 after eight overs. A wonderful innings by these both these boys –well done guys. Unfortunately the wheels came off a bit at this stage. Hal Quinn and Mathew Hodge were the next pair in and battled to get any momentum going. They both played a few very good shots, but two run-outs and some good bowling by the Ludgrove boys pinned them back. The next pair in were Matthew Meikle and Rob Phillips. Again a few excellent shots were played and these two were scoring fairly quickly, but a lack of communication led to a disastrous run-out and this halted their momentum. Unfortunately an excellent last over to the pair meant we lost another wicket and didn’t get any runs, but on the whole not a bad effort. Our next pair, Hamid Lawal and Alvaro Rivas De Anta had never played cricket before and although they lost 2 wickets in their first over, they managed to get through the next 3 overs without losing another one and put on some runs. For a first time it was a really good effort—well done guys. The last pair in were Harry Rees and Ben Barnard, who provided the fireworks for the day. Ben started by hooking his first ball for four. We lost a few wickets but Harry and Ben kept the scoreboard ticking, with Ben playing a Kevin Pietersonesque innings that very nearly included a six.
It was a good effort by the boys but Ludgroves’ tighter bowling and more disciplined batting saw them through in the end.
