U8 A v Hall Grove

Saturday 7th June

Due to everything that makes an English summer the global conversational topic that it is, this was to be our first and last match of the season!  100% unbeaten…3 hours would decide the outcome!  We started with the bat and following a season of drive and focus on running and calling between the wickets, we set about building an innings.  Finlay and Ben came out as our first pair and managed a respectable 17 runs with one wicket.  Tatsu and Callum followed scoring a run a ball with 18 runs for the loss of 2 wickets.  Having sussed the state of the wicket, Jack and Max then came in and knocked a wonderful 22 for just the 1 wicket.  Daniel and Ru steadily notched up 16 without losing a wicket.  To make up 5 pairs Ru then accompanied Max for a final 3 overs.  They added a crucial 25 with the fall of 1 wicket.

Without the wickets this was a score of 98 from 90 balls…a run rate of 6.53 per over.  Now that’s pretty special considering our National rate against New Zealand in the latest series.  Move aside Mr Vaughan, Eagle House are taking over!  However, we did lose 25 runs for the wickets, so we were defending a total of 273.

Hall Grove kindly offered us 2 fielders to keep things even and our bowlers started our defence.  Jack did us proud taking 4 wickets, all bowled.  He has an amazing action and there was little that Hall Grove could do as he was on fire!  Callum also took a valuable wicket and this gave us the 25 runs that we had lost earlier in the game.  What it would come down to was fielding…the team aspect of this rather odd game!  Our backing up was fantastic as was all the thinking and reading of the game.  It is easy to drift off and usually when this happens, the ball invariably comes your way.  We maintained our attention and despite some great hitting, we managed to keep Hall Grove down to 266 at the close of play, a win by 7 runs.

Both teams played some great cricket and the spirit of the game was excellent.  I would certainly like to thank Hall Grove for hosting us on this gloriously sunny day.  Well played all!  I would also like to thank Jess for coming with the B team who also enjoyed a cracking game.
