After a quick but thorough practice session we set off for Lambrook in confident fashion. I was impressed with the enthusiasm of the girls, as they had only found out on Wednesday that we would be playing this match. I was also impressed with how organized they were. They had arranged their own biscuits, juice and water bottles, leaving me to do very little. (After coaching U/8 and U/9 boys for the past few years this was a real treat!)
We arrived, had a quick warm up and took up our starting positions. The first quarter was a bit like a netball match, with both sets of girls looking quite nervous to dribble the ball. Things soon settled down though and the girls became far more relaxed and confident on the ball. The footwork and handling was superb and everyone put 100% in. We took an early lead with a basket scored by Holly, and we never looked back. The first quarter ended with us edging it 6-2.
We started off the second quarter as we had ended the first and immediately went on the attack. Kim was working well in tandem with Ashleigh down the right , and were causing Lambrook all sorts of problems down this flank. Likewise Romy, Eliza and Heidi were controlling the left side of the court and were not giving the Lambrook girls any time to settle. We ended the second quarter 10-6 to the good.
Lambrook came out firing in the third quarter, and put the girls under a lot of pressure. Jen (the destroyer) Edwards was rock solid in defence, and saved us on a number of occasions. The ball wasn’t going to hand and we seemed to have lost a bit of our focus, which allowed the opposition to get back into the game. Alex was doing a fantastic job shooting from outside the key, and how she didn’t manage to chalk up a 3 pointer I will never know. Apart from that, though, the quarter belonged to Lambrook, and they had deservedly closed the gap to only two points. 10-8
The last quarter was a fast and furious affair with all the players giving absolutely everything for the cause. For a few minutes I thought Lambrook were going to take the game, but I didn’t need to worry, the Eagle House girls had decided they were not leaving without a win. We scored three quick baskets on the trot, and this effectively ended the game as a contest. Final score: Eagle House 16 – Lambrook 10
A huge congratulations to all the girls, who played very well, especially considering the minimal preparations. I would just like to also comment on how polite the girls were on and off the court, it was an absolute pleasure taking you to the match. Well done!
